tbsp. Bayswater

tbsp. Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

tbsp. is a really clean and stylish Korean cafe in Bayswater on King William St near the junction of Whatley Crescent. The cafe does not take bookings, so we arrived at around 10am on a Sunday morning and were luckily seated immediately.

20171119_105545

Everything on the menu looked yummy with most dishes being standard Australian brunch with an Asian twist.

20171119_105537

The coffee is top class – I chose an iced soy coffee and my partner chose a flat white.

After perusing the menu and dithering between buttermilk chicken burger, congee, and kimchi rice, I plumped for the brisket hollandaise while my partner chose the kimcheese burger,

Everything about the hollandaise tasted amazing – the ciabatta was fresh, a generous serving of brisket and caramelised onions, beautiful slow cooked eggs, and hollandaise with a spicy twist.

20171119_104029

The kimcheese burger was the best burger that my partner has ever tasted. He said that everything about it was perfect. The patties tasty and juicy and slightly rare, the pickles delicious, the kimchi mayonnaise tied everything together, the American cheese gave it a real classic burger feel and the bun sopped up all of the lovely juices. He’ll be talking about that burger for a long time.

20171119_104024

What an amazing cafe. I can’t wait to return to try all of the other menu options that had me salivating.

Nobu at Crown Perth

Nobu Perth Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

20171118_200204

Nobu in Perth is one of two branches in Australia (the other one is in Melbourne), a cool sophisticated restaurant located in the Crown Casino complex at Burswood. Sleek and stylish it is similar to other Nobu branches around the world, and this one has the advantage of overlooking the hotel pool, and has an interesting ceiling centrepiece of glass coloured baubles.

20171118_183503

The menu is quite varied with nibbles, oysters, sashimi, salad, tempura, wagyu, lobster, gyoza, sushi, and various signature hot and cold dishes.

We chose mocktails to drink.

A Nobu sunrise – Pineapple, Orange, Passionfruit Juice, Sugar Syrup & Grenadine – with a wonderful dehydrated slice of orange on top – yum.

20171118_182926

A Berry Mule – Fresh Lemon, Raspberries, Grenadine & Ginger Beer – with a mountain peach.

20171118_182932

Our first dish to arrive was a special of the day. Salmon sashimi with nashi pear, truffle oil, yuzu and chives. It was quite nice but the truffle was a little overpowering for the delicate salmon.

20171118_182916

Next came sashimi salad with matsuhisa dressing – a favourite of ours. The dressing is made from finely chopped onion, rice vinegar, mustard powder, sesame oil and soy. The seared tuna went beautifully with the leaves and dressing.

20171118_183534

Next came the best dish of the night. Tempura soft shell crab harumaki – beautifully cooked crab inside a crispy tempura batter served with a reduction and a wasabi mayonnaise. The mayo was just right, just enough wasabi to taste it without dominating the dish. Every mouthful was a delight, and the dish was served with some very addictive pickled vegetables.

20171118_185321

Next came Pepper Crusted Seabass with Balsamic Teriyaki. A beautiful seabass portion sitting on the sauce with lotus root chips, spring onion and pak choy. The crust was nice and crispy, and the fish really fresh and just flaking apart nicely. Another really good dish with the flavour of the crust being a nice contrast to the soft flesh.

20171118_190444

Next was Pork Belly Spicy Miso Caramel. Melt in the mouth pork belly with a delicious sticky sauce – another great choice.

20171118_191036

The last main dish consisted of two maki rolls and some miso soup. If you thought that all miso soups were the same, then I urge you to try Nobu’s miso soup. Such a wonderful umami flavour with beautiful silken tofu and seaweed.

20171118_192104

Maki rolls are fairly standard Japanese fare, and I didn’t really expect them to blow me away, but they really delivered at Nobu. I loved how they were very tightly rolled so that they didn’t fall apart on dipping, and the ingredients were top quality. The salmon skin rolls contained lovely crunchy salmon skin and flesh with some veggies to contrast the seasoning of the salmon. Then the little spicy tuna rolls wrapped in seaweed were explosions of flavour, great quality tuna with a nice chilli hit.

20171118_192523

For dessert we chose Nobu alfajores (South American cornstarch cookies with dulce de leche), and a Nobu cheesecake. The alfajores were a yuzu flavoured shortbread with yuzu curd, chocolate ganache, dulce de leche ice cream and candied puffed buckwheat.

The cheesecake was small but perfectly formed, baked (our preference to whipped) with passionfruit sorbet and raspberry sauce. A really wonderful selection of desserts to complete the meal, with a ‘Happy Anniversary’ thrown in.

20171118_194704

Everything at Nobu is made well with quality ingredients. This comes at a premium price, but it really is the perfect location for a special occasion.

This is a photo diary of a previous visit on 22 November 2012:

I went to Nobu at the weekend. This is a photo diary of my dishes. They were delicious.

Sashimi salad with matsuhisa dressing

Wagyu tacos

Sea bass tempura with three sauces – jalapeno, spicy mayo and ponzu

Signature Nobu dish – black cod with miso

Spicy tuna maki, eel and cucumber rolls

Pappagallo, Leederville

Pappagallo Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Pappagallo is a bustling Italian restaurant that occupies a corner position at the junction of Oxford Street and Bourke Street. It’s about halfway along Oxford Street and away from the main Leederville strip. I first discovered this place a few months back when I was looking for traditional Italian pizza – not hawaiian, not chicken tikka, just beautiful simple unadulterated Italian pizza. Pappagallo really delivered on the pizza with the last mouthful being as perfectly tasty as the first, and we now visit regularly for our pizza fix.

20171117_185830

20171117_190032

The drinks menu is quite extensive and we love the Galvanina range of soft drinks that are offered – the blood orange soda is a wonderful drink.

20171117_190831

Today we chose to share a pizza, a pasta dish, and a salad. Pappagallo do a mean coleslaw salad, however it’s a winter menu item and was not available today, so we chose a red cabbage, cucumber, celery, lemon zest and basil salad – quite a nice backdrop to the other dishes.

20171117_191648

The pizza was a Napoli with tomato, mozarella, capers, anchovies, and olives. Wonderfully piquant and oozing with cheese, on top of a perfect thin crust – absolutely delicious and the reason why Pappagallo pizzas are so popular.

20171117_191538

We also chose the ravioli of the day – lamb ravioli on a bed of butternut pumpkin puree. Again, delicious, the huge pillows of ravioli perfectly seasoned, the pumpkin lovely and soft underneath.

20171117_191640

We felt fairly full but decided to share a dessert. Italian ricotta doughnuts with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream. Excellent quality ice cream with soft sugary doughnuts and a wonderful glossy chocolate sauce – yum.

20171117_195055.jpg

Other items on the menu include a range of starters – a platter of cured meats, cheese and pickles; arancini; chicken skewers; italian sausage; polenta. As well as pizza and pasta dishes, you can choose chicken, fish, steak, veal and a seafood soup – anything that you would find in a cafe in Italy.

I consider this to be one if the best Italian restaurants in Perth, and definitely my ‘go to’ place for pizza.

Tutti Frutti, East Vic Park

Tutti Frutti Victoria Park Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

If you want a dessert, Tutti Frutti is a frozen yoghurt bar with some interesting flavours and a toppings bar that will please children and adults alike. What you have to do is choose an appropriate size cup – strangely they didn’t have any small – they  all seemed to be large or ginormous !

20171111_183309.jpg

Then you go to the dispensers at the wall and choose your froyo flavours. I chose coconut and strawberry, but there were plenty of other flavours like green tea, soy peanut butter, salted caramel, berries, chocolate, vanilla, lychee etc.

Next you choose toppings and sauces from the toppings bar where you can choose honeycomb, cookie dough, fruits, jazzies, jellies etc.

20171111_184236

20171111_184240

Then you get the resulting sundae weighed and end up paying about $11 for it !

No wonder they don’t have small cups. The sundaes were very enjoyable, and it’s a nice dessert option, especially a favourite with children because they can design their own dessert.

Sedap Place, East Vic Park

Sedap Place Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

I wasn’t aware of Sedap Place until it came up on an Entertainment Book email, so I checked out the menu, it sounded good and we decided to give it a go. It’s on the main strip of Albany Highway among many other Asian restaurants. The menu is fairly typical Malaysian with favourites like laksa, nasi lemak, char kway teow, roti canai, and nasi goreng. I chose a lemon ice to drink, and we started with some spring rolls.

20171111_174958

20171111_175143

The achar pickle was a nice touch with the spring rolls.

For mains I ordered char kway teow and my companion ordered beef rendang but was told that he could only have the rendang as part of a nasi lemak. When he asked if he could have just the rendang and rice it seemed that the kitchen were unable to manage anything not on the standard menu. We also noticed that there were a lot of items on the menu marked as not available. He also asked for a mango smoothie….not available. Any other smoothie ?…..not available. He ended up having lemonade.

20171111_181215

My char kway teow was nice and had all of the standard authentic features but could have done with some spice. A small pot of chilli oil or sambal would have been a good addition. I have eaten better c.k.t. in Perth.

20171111_180156

20171111_180158

The beef rendang was very tender, and the nasi lemak was good, but again could have done with some seasoning.

We probably won’t return to Sedap Place – it is fairly average, and the service is not the best. The nasi lemak arrived about 20 minutes ahead of the char kway teow, and it really shouldn’t be that difficult to coordinate two dishes being cooked together.

La Veen Coffee and Kitchen, Perth CBD

La Veen Coffee & Kitchen Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

20171111_115859.jpg

I had heard that La Veen did great coffee, and today we were in the centre of town so decided to have lunch there. It is on the corner of Wellington and King Street, quite a spacious cafe.

20171111_115833

We were quickly seated and decided to order coffees first – a flat white and an iced latte. They serve Five Senses coffee here and the house blend is delicious. Five Senses is the brand of coffee that we have delivered to home, so we know that it’s the best in Perth.

20171111_112534.jpg

20171111_112540.jpg20171111_112540

Both coffees were smooth and rich with a lovely caramel finish.

For lunch I chose the pulled pork burger with chips. This was a little disappointing – the pork was quite sweet, so I had to eat it with the chips to add a bit of blandness to the strong sweet flavour. I would have liked more slaw, and the bun was also quite sweet.

20171111_114512

My companion chose the Boston beans with a poached egg. The beans were nicely cooked and tomatoey, but a little sweet, the cheese was a perfect amount and the egg was nicely poached. The potato skins were a nice touch, although it was quite a small portion for the price.

20171111_114508

When we left, I had a look at the cake cabinet which seemed quite appealing.

20171111_115820

So will I be going back to La Veen ? Not for lunch, but definitely for coffee and cake if I am in the area. I think there are better food outlets in the city.

Clancy’s Fish Bar, City Beach

Clancy's Fish Pub Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

20171110_193829

Clancy’s is a busy quirky bar and restaurant right on the beach at City Beach. Family and pet friendly, and quite lively, there are many tables overlooking the beach and ocean. Clancy’s don’t take bookings, but we were seated fairly quickly on a Friday night, at a window table with high seats.

20171110_193759

20171110_193734

We chose a glass of Margaret River sauvignon blanc to start – nice, but a bit more acidic than my favourite Marlborough sauvs.

20171110_191734

20171110_190412

The menu contains fish of course, snapper, barramundi, trout, salmon, and sefood favourites including oysters, squid, fish tacos, mussels and paella. You can order smaller dishes to share or larger dishes for a traditional main course.

My companion chose the pulled pork burger. It was nicely flavoured but not great value considering that it did not contain much pork.

20171110_192002

I chose the grilled barramundi and chips with mayo and slaw. It was lovely, fresh, there was plenty of it, and the combination was really well matched.

20171110_192005

We didn’t have room for dessert, so left it at that. The meal was nice but not outstanding, and it was quite expensive for what we had. I would go back because it’s a great location, but I am not sure that I will be a regular.

Portofinos, Mindarie

Portofinos Restaurant Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Portofinos is a large restaurant at the Quinn’s end of Mindarie, and it has the advantage of overlooking the ocean. We went there on a Friday evening and it was quite busy and noisy with lots of families dining.

We were directed to a table fairly close to the large windows with a panoramic view of the ocean. The waitress seated us, but it was quite a while before we were offered some drinks.

20171006_181940

The menu includes tapas style plates as well as larger mains. We decided to choose some tapas to share. We also chose a glass of Jim Barry Lavender Hill Riesling each, which was okay, but not the best Riesling that I have sampled.

We started with a sharing plate of chicken wings, halloumi, arancini, smoked sausage, mixed pickles, vegetable frittata, olives, dip and flatbread. The bread was nicely made and cooked, and the wings were quite tasty. The halloumi was overly salty and not pleasant to eat and the chorizo was very strongly spiced. In contrast, the frittata needed some seasoning and the other items were okay. The dip was quite nice.

20171006_184137

We also chose whitebait – nice standard fare, quite tasty.

20171006_184141.jpg

Next came a duck spring roll and this was definitely the best dish of the meal, but a bit pricey at $12 for one roll which was cut into 3 pieces (sorry I ate one before taking the pic).

20171006_184144.jpg

Lastly a chicken pate with pear chutney and turkish bread. The pear chutney really didn’t add anything to the plate. The pate was quite nice though.

20171006_184148

So what was the verdict on Portofinos ? It certainly has a great view, and if you have a family it is very child-friendly. It’s not a great place for a date though, because it is noisy and brash. The food was okay, but expensive considering that it wasn’t amazing. The duck spring roll was very nice, but everything else was pretty average.

Source Foods, Highgate

Source Foods Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

20171105_094036

Source Foods is a cafe and deli that know what they are doing. Everything about the ambience, the menu, the coffee, displays a real love and knowledge of food. One of the most popular breakfast/brunch spots along Beaufort Street, it is located at the City end of Beaufort on the junction of Brisbane Street.

20171105_090420

Stylishly decorated, the cafe has a long list of juices and smoothies, the odd special, some beautiful looking cakes and bagels in the cold cabinet, and informative tasting notes on the house blend coffee and available single origins.

The menu sources the best local produce and includes items such as breakfast burger, coconut and passion fruit pannacotta with stone fruits, feta and spring onion scrampled eggs, nasi goreng, vegan feast (chick pea & black bean falafel, smoked field mushrooms, charred asparagus, butternut hummus, smooth avocado, rocket, vegan feta & smashed hazelnuts), pan fried brussel sprouts with broad beans, cress, pesto, artichoke and confit tomato, and they seem to cater for all dietary needs while still keeping the food interesting and appetising.

My companion said that his coffee was in the top three that he has tasted in the world. High praise indeed considering that the number one coffee is in Chicago (Ipsento, in case you are interested on N Western Avenue).20171105_091623

I ordered a monkey business style protein smoothie with banana, almond milk, peanut butter and protein powder. They even double checked the type of protein powder that I wanted in case of allergies ! It tasted beautifully smooth, not powdery at all, and not sickly like some peanut butter smoothies can be. Yummy indeed.

20171105_092940

For breakfast my companion chose the pulled pork quesadilla with chipotle beans, cheddar, rocket, chilli mayo and onion jam. It was a lunch special, but they very accommodatingly allowed it as a breakfast item. The last mouthful was as good as the first and everything about it was beautifully prepared and delicious.

20171105_092259

I chose the miso hot-smoked salmon, with roasted kipfler potato, chorizo, torched eggplant hummus, asparagus, herbs & soft fried egg. Again a wonderfully constructed dish where nothing on the plate was out of place. Also a nicely sized portion. The torched eggplant hummus was smoky and delicious, and the salmon was plentiful, good quality and very very tasty.

20171105_092302

It took all of our strength not to have something to takeaway from the cold cabinet afterwards – it all looked so appealing.

20171105_094020

It was a wonderful meal, and we were serenaded by 80’s music, which had us tapping our feet. Source is definitely a favourite with the locals and now looks like it is a new favourite with us. A big thumbs up and a nicely full belly.
