The Boatshed Restaurant, South Perth

The Boatshed Restaurant Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

The Boatshed certainly has stunning views of the city. Situated at the foreshore end of Coode Street in South Perth, with a convenient car park, it’s a really nice space with lots of sofas and casual seating where you can have a drink before you are shown to your table. There is also a large dining area for parties that looks like it can be partitioned off from the rest of the dining room. With an array of tables next to the vista window, and plenty of other tables that still enjoy the great riverside view, the restaurant has a sophisticated but feelgood vibe.

We started with a glass of riesling and I was surprised to be offered two choices of riesling by the glass – and we chose the local Whicher Ridge Frankland River riesling which had all the fruity, lime, floral, and crisp qualities of this grape variety.

For starters I chose half a dozen oysters, 3 natural and 3 with nuoc mam. The vietnamese dressing was on the spicy side, and may be uncomfortable for some diners, but I enjoyed it. The oysters were good quality, fresh, and real taste of the ocean.

My partner had the Thai spiced fishcakes with wakame (seaweed) and soba noodle salad, and pineapple and green mango salsa. These were very good and plentiful, the noodles had a lovely lime dressing, and the salsa another great taste and texture.

For main course I chose the crispy pork belly with scallops. The scallops were fresh, perfectly cooked, slightly sweet, and high quality. The pork belly was also well cooked, the soft meat flaked apart, the fat was completely rendered, and the crispy crackling was crunchy and satisfying. Served on a bed of corn and golden beetroot with a lovely rich jus, this was a triumph of a dish.

My partner chose the beef cheek, which he thoroughly enjoyed. The meat again soft and succulent, falling apart and served with a chervil potato puree, sugar snaps, and heirloom carrots.

Although full, we opted for dessert, hoping that it would be as good as the rest of the meal, and it certainly was. It was a difficult choice, but I selected the PB&J dessert – peanut butter mousse, raspberry sorbet, peanut brittle, peanut butter cookie dough, raspberry gel and freeze dried raspberries. It certainly delivered – wonderfully smooth mousse on a chocolate soil, great crispy brittle, and the gel was so concentrated, it was pure raspberry gorgeousness.

My partner chose the sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce, vanilla ice cream and chocolate soil. This was lush, sweet and sticky and everything that you could want from a sticky toffee pudding.

The Boatshed gave us a very memorable meal. The staff were spot on – helpful but not intrusive, and every dish was made with care and beautifully presented. Highly recommended for great food and great views.

Swell, Mullaloo

Swell Mullaloo Beach Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Swell is a relatively new cafe at Mullaloo, perched at the top of the Surf Life Saving club. With no road between the cafe and the beach, it has uninterrupted views of the Indian Ocean, and on our visit we had a great sunset. There are several tables along the window with the best view, but you have to book for those, and we were given a seat a little further back, but still good enough to catch the beauty of the sun going down over the ocean.

20180928_175552

We chose an exquisite home made Raspberry and Lemonade kombucha to drink. This was lovely with really nice iced raspberries – very refreshing.

20180928_180132

Our bread starter was very generous with a good serving of EVOO and balsamic as well as some whipped butter. The bread was fresh and warm from the oven.

20180928_180616

We both fancied fish (because the original plan for the evening was to get takeaway fish and chips). My partner chose the special swordfish with crispy kale, roast potatoes, charred corn and tomato salsa. The fish was fresh and tasty, the potatoes had good flavour with creamy soft insides, the salsa was fresh, and the kale a nice crispy contrast. He left a clean plate.

20180928_183602.jpg

I chose the fish and chips with rainbow slaw and home made tartare sauce. The chips were plentiful, the fish fresh with a lovely crispy batter, and the slaw had a good zing to it.

20180928_183608

There were lots of other nice options on the menu such as beef duo – steak and brisket pot pie, pulled lamb flatbread, swell burger, braised lamb shoulder and chicken penang curry. It all sounded lovely and we had difficulty choosing, but we did choose two winning dishes, and the staff were lovely. It will be nice to go back for breakfast.

Cornerstone Ale House, Jindalee

Cornerstone Ale House Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

The Cornerstone Ale House is in the northern suburb of Jindalee, a little way north of the end of the Mitchell Freeway, a modern area where the architects have included pretty lakes, ponds and fountains.

20180914_183923

I was invited to review the Cornerstone bistro, and we were given a quiet table overlooking the outdoor deck and one of the nice ponds.

20180914_183929

The menu is quite varied with many pub favourites like pasta, chicken parmi, bangers and mash, lamb shanks and steak, but it also includes some more sophisticated options like pork belly, thai chilli crab and beef cheeks. There is also a specials menu, and the special curry of the day was beef vindaloo.

We started with a glass of New Zealand Southern Skies sauvignon blanc – very reasonable at $6.50 a glass, and a nice fruity sauvi which we enjoyed very much.

20180914_185035

For starters we chose the pork belly bites served on pulled pork and onion jam and the buffalo wings with BBQ marinade and coleslaw.

The pork belly bites were perfect. Beautifully cooked pork and a lovely crunch on the crackling, just a nice amount of onion jam, and 4 nice chunks of pork. I would order these again in a heartbeat. I would even think about ordering a double portion for my main – they were so good.

20180914_185955

The buffalo wings were also very nice, sticky and well cooked. We were provided with a finger bowl and extra serviettes. the marinade was slightly sweet for my tastes, but it didn’t affect my enjoyment of them. I do love coleslaw, and the house made slaw was a good quality version and a nice backdrop to the meaty wings. Yum.

20180914_185958

For main my partner chose the special beef vindaloo which he thoroughly enjoyed. It was nicely spicy with well cooked beef and a dish that he would choose again. It was a generous portion of curry, but a small portion of rice, maybe in future we would ask for extra rice.

20180914_192151

I was intrigued to try the chilli crab which came as a very generous portion of two spanner crabs with prawns (there were at least 6 large prawns) in a spicy red coconut curry sauce. At $29 for this dish, I wondered how they make any money on it – it was a very generous portion for the price.

20180914_192155

I was provided with shell crackers and a meat picker, and found eating the crabs a very messy but enjoyable experience. This is definitely not a first date dish and I did wonder if others might choose it from the menu thinking that the crab meat would be already prepared and de-shelled, so it could be worth a slight change for the menu to state that the crab is ‘in the shell’. I didn’t mind though, and I loved it and made a complete mess of the table. Again, despite the generosity of everything else, the rice portion was a bit small, and I could have done with a little more.

For dessert we chose to share the sticky date pudding.

This was a delightfully gooey dessert with a lovely caramel ice cream, and a great finish to a lovely meal.

The wait staff were lovely throughout, after each course they checked to make sure that we were ready for the next course, and they made sure that we had enough table water and serviettes. The food portions were generous and very good value, and everything was tasty and well prepared.

I expected standard pub fare (which is generally hearty but often pre-packaged frozen food), and was surprised to receive food that was prepared with care, definitely home-made, and very tasty. I will be back soon to try some of the other dishes.

Pacific Marketplace, Pan Pacific, Singapore

Pacific Marketplace Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

The Pacific Marketplace is an eatery on the ground floor of the Pan Pacific Hotel, Marina Bay. Hotels are notoriously expensive for dining, but the Pacific Marketplace is a way to dine at a more reasonable price without breaking the bank.

Offering a variety of local and international dishes, the cafe also serves high tea and has a wonderful patisserie. During our stay we tried the patisserie on a few occasions and were very happy with the standard and presentation of cakes.

Chocolate fudge cake, carrot cake, banana cheesecake, black forest gateau, key lime tart:

Salted caramel eclair, manjari cafe(coffee) gateau, matcha lychee gateau, gula melaka:

Ivory raspberry:

These are the cakes that we tried:

Salted caramel eclair – wonderfully smooth caramel filling where the salt flavour came through, beautifully tempered chocolate and dreamy ganache. Very very nice.

20180825_093832

Chocolate fudge cake. A really lovely chocolate hit without being too sickly sweet.

20180825_093837

Key lime tart. Beautifully presented and delicate. It could have taken a bit more lime flavour, but was still very good.

20180827_155543

Carrot cake. Pleasant and good carrot flavour, but could have had a better cake to carrot ratio in the mix.

20180827_155545

All in all, this is a beautiful top end patisserie, and I recommend Pacific marketplace for a stunning afternoon tea.

Sweet Spot, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore

20180826_095508a

If you’re looking for a fine patisserie in Singapore, head for Sweet Spot located in the hotel lobby of tower 3 at the Marina Bay Sands hotel. You can’t miss the hotel – it’s in Marina Bay and dominates the skyline with its three towers and boat like structure at the top. It’s quite a nice idea to walk across the Helix Bridge and then visit the patisserie for some coffee and cake at the end of the walk.

20180826_095012

A vast array of breads, pastries, cakes, macarons and chocolates is on display in the never-ending chilled cabinet and it is really hard to make a choice. The cakes are perfectly presented, and the Danish selection is innovative and tempting.

20180826_095010.jpg

The cafe serves coffee and tea, and the charismatic staff take care to ensure that your drink order is executed exactly as requested.

I chose a raspberry danish which was beautifully made, fresh and delicious.

20180826_095500

My partner chose an apple cinnamon bun – again very nicely spiced with great dough/pastry.

20180826_095506

Sweet Spot is well worth a visit, well several visits, because it’s so very difficult to choose just one cake, and the quality of the goods is outstanding.
