It Just Has To Be Delicious

Bangkok Brothers, Whitfords

Bangkok Brothers Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Bangkok Brothers is one of the new restaurants located at Whitfords Mall on the cinema ‘strip’. It’s a large area with seating inside and out, and a modern twist on a traditional Thai menu. I was looking forward to my meal.

It took a while to get served, the staff seemed busy rearranging tables and settings in a restaurant that was only 10% occupied, and it was hard to catch their attention. Eventually a waitress attended the table, and she was quite pleasant. To start we chose to share some traditional Thai prawn cakes – minced pork and prawn in a crispy coating – deep fried. They were served with a sticky plum sauce. This was a generous portion and the cakes were tasty. The sauce was quite sticky and sweet, and I would have liked a lime citrus contrast.

We drank pink lemonade, which I was expecting to be raspberry flavoured lemonade – subtle and a little sharp, but again, this was cloyingly sweet – think supermarket brand cherry soda and then double the sweetness – I found it hard to drink this.

For mains we picked the soft shell crab with som tum – two of my favourite things, and a green chicken curry with rice.

Sadly the soft shell crab did not deliver – the batter tasted strange, and the crab was soft and a little soggy. The som tum was a fairly standard papaya salad, but had some large chunks of chilli in it and was quite astringent, so it made my mouth sore. I have eaten som tum on several occasions, and sometimes it can be quite hot and sour, but this was quite extreme.

The crab was accompanied by some very sweet Thai chilli sauce. Sadly I left most of the crab because of the strange batter – I wondered if it had been cooked in the same oil as chicken wings.

When the green curry arrived, there wasn’t much room on the table, so my partner picked his plate up, and the waiter pretty much threw the curry down on the table and walked off without attempting to help rearrange the table. It seemed really rude.

The green curry was equally disappointing. It was under-seasoned and the veggies were raw. I don’t mind blanched veggies in my Thai curry, but these veggies were solid and not pleasant to eat. I was disappointed that the curry omitted eggplant, which is the traditional veg that you would see – instead there was broccoli, zucchini and mangetout.

We left most of the food. The staff didn’t ask if the meal was okay, and the service was mostly somewhere between rude and non-existent. I won’t be wasting my money in here again.

Raspberry and white chocolate loaf cake

Raspberries and white chocolate make a great combination, and a loaf cake is easy to prepare and slice. This lovely light and slightly gooey cake is a sweet summer treat.

I have suggested a few things to reduce the dairy, but you really can’t remove it completely unless you use dark chocolate instead (which works equally well with raspberries).

20181105_204329

If you are going for the reduced dairy version, first make your own buttermilk by adding a tablespoon of lemon juice to three quarters of a cup of your favourite non-dairy milk e.g. almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk. Leave it for ten minutes until it curdles.

Line a loaf tin with baking parchment and set the oven to 180 deg C.

Take a punnet of raspberries (1 cup approx). Wash and pat them dry and dust them lightly with some flour.

Take approx 75g of fine white chocolate and break it into small pieces – they don’t have to be uniform in size, just smallish pieces about the same size as choc chips that you would get in a choc chip cookie.

Put the curdled ‘buttermilk’ in a large mixing bowl and add:
125 ml vegetable oil
2 eggs
1 teaspoon of vanilla

Whisk them all together with an electric whisk for a few minutes.

In another bowl combine:
One and a half cups of flour
three quarters of a cup of caster sugar
1 heaped teaspoon of baking powder
Half a teaspoon of salt

Fold the dry ingredients into the whisked wet ingredients.

Fold in the raspberries and white chocolate pieces. Pour the mixture into the lined loaf tin and tap the tin on the kitchen worktop to ensure that the mixture gets into the corners of the tin.

Bake for just longer than an hour until a skewer comes out mostly clean (there will be some gooey choc on the skewer).

20181105_195350Cool the cake by lifting it out of the tin. Once almost cool, melt approx 100g white chocolate in a double boiler (a bowl that fits tightly over a saucepan, with some water in the saucepan will work nicely too. Just make sure that the water does not touch the bottom of the bowl.)

Drizzle the melted chocolate over the top of the cake. Done !

Nando’s, Clarkson

Nando's Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

I’m not a great lover of ‘fast’ food, but I am quite partial to Nando’s sometimes. I find that the different outlets can be quite variable, but one that seems to be consistently good is the Clarkson branch which sits in Ocean Keys Boulevard on the outside part of Ocean Keys shopping centre.

If you are not familiar with the offerings, there are various forms of grilled basted chicken – quarters, halves, whole chickens, wraps, burgers, salads etc. and you choose the heat of your basing from mild to extra hot, or the mild and fruity flavours lemon and herb, and mango and lime.

The Clarkson restaurant is usually quite clean, although some of the booth seating is beginning to look worn.

20181104_182515

On this visit we chose to share churrasco bbq thighs basted with mild sauce, a chicken quarter basted with mango and lime, peri chips (the peri salt is a spicy seasoning), perinaise dip and corn on the cob.

The thighs were succulent and the chicken breast was tasty. I believe that Nando’s pre-marinate and cook the chickens, so they are always cooked through, then they finish them off on the grill with the basting of your choice. The marinade is probably why the meat is always so juicy and tender.

The corn was nice, although the portion sizes of corn are larger in the UK version of Nando’s, but the chip portion sizes are more generous in Australia.

I really enjoyed the food and will continue to go to this branch in future.

Cocolat, Scarborough

Chocolat Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato
Cocolat is a cafe, dessert bar at the heart of the newly refurbished Scarborough Beach esplanade. It is next to the lido, with wonderful views of the Indian Ocean.

I visited this weekend, with some friends. Previously I came here a year ago (and was not overly impressed – it was nice cafe, but didn’t have the wow factor).

This time I chose a pear and pistachio cake, but when it arrived it was quite dense and tasted a bit stale. I took the cake back and the staff replaced it with a chocolate mousse dome that was much nicer.

My friends chose a lemon tart:

A mango dome:

A chocolate lamington and some berry sorbet:

The desserts were presented well and tasted okay, but still did not deliver on that special something – it seems that squirty cream accompanies everything.  The staff made a few mistakes too, which they did rectify, but I felt that they were busy and not paying attention which probably detracted from this being a special afternoon. I haven’t changed my opinion of Cocolat – it’s okay, but it’s not amazing.

Below is an extract from my previous blog post:

You can choose tea, coffee, fruit drinks and smoothies, then there’s an array of gelato and cakes in the display cabinets.

I chose a fruit smoothie and a raspberry melting moment.

The melting moment was a lovely combination of shortcake and raspberry buttercream which I thoroughly enjoyed.

My partner chose the salted caramel cheesecake, which was nicely constructed. A biscuit base with caramel cheesecake filling and layers of sweet caramel.

The view was very nice, and although the sweets were nice, I wouldn’t travel all the way back to Cocolat to have them again – the food didn’t make us go “wow”.

Bites by D, Mount Hawthorn

Bites By D Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

This is an updated blog post about Bites by D, because I am already a fan, but for the first time I went to this beautiful cake shop for High Tea.
Bites is not a licensed venue, so you can bring your own bubbles, but if you forget there’s a liquor store nearby that gives discount for Bites by D customers.
Everything on the table was set out perfectly, and the china looked really great.

20181104_124749

The tea menu contains a good selection of loose leaf teas from T2, and when you order, the pot is quite generous. The High Tea includes unlimited tea and coffee, which you can order at any time.

The savouries platter included a lovely risoni pasta salad in a pot, and exquisite beetroot cream tart with pastry to die for, a beef slider, and a pumpkin scone with cream cheese and chive spread.

It took quite a while to chomp our way through the savouries, and they were so so nice, the scones perfectly baked, and everything was made with care and finesse. After the savouries, we were presented with a raspberry sorbet, topped with freeze dried raspberries. This was lovely and bursting with raspberry goodness.

20181104_133947.jpg

Nothing could prepare us for the beauty of the sweet platter – oh my goodness, every piece looked so appetising.

20181104_134908

The top layer contained a rich buttery friand, topped with strawberry and buttercream, and a profiterole with a crunchy surface known as a choux au craquelin. Both of these were light and delicious.

20181104_134911

The bottom layer contained the signature summer delight which is gluten free, layers of vanilla and lemon Bavarian cream, almond and pistachio biscuit, raspberry and strawberry jelly. The star item for me was the golden chocolate cube with chocolate crumb, chocolate mousse, salted caramel cremeux, all dipped in chocolate and topped with meringue, raspberry and a golden praline.

They also provided a cupcake for my partner who was celebrating a birthday.

We definitely felt very special having High Tea at Bites By D. This is definitely one of the best venues for afternoon tea in Perth.

This is my first blog post which I posted a year ago:

Ever since leaving Brisbane, I have been looking for a patisserie to match the finesse of Le Bon Choix. There are plenty of cake shops in Perth, but so far nothing has displayed the attention to detail and aesthetic pleasure that LBC did. Then I discovered Bites by D, a shop in Mount Hawthorn on Scarborough Beach Road and oh my goodness this place delivers.

20171119_111736

We just bought a few cakes for takeaway, but it was a really difficult decision with so many beautiful cakes on display – all freshly made on the premises.

We selected a toffee crunch eclair and a Ferrero Rocher cupcake. The eclair had a wonderful gooey but not too sweet salted caramel filling, great pastry with a lovely crunchy nut topping.

eclair

The cup cake was like a cross between a cup cake and a brownie, wonderfully moist with a quality chocolate cream inside. Very nice.

ferrero rocher

There is seating in the shop so you can sit and have a drink with your cake, and they also offer high tea, which sounds amazing. I can’t wait to go back for more.

Well we did go back for more and I took some better photos. I had coffee which was lovely – Five Senses.
