Chinta, North Perth

Chinta is a zen oasis on Scarborough Beach Road (at the North Perth end), and the moment you walk in, you feel relaxed – it’s like being inside an exotic garden of delights.

The staff are lovely and found us a table straight away. We perused the menu and found it to be one of those menus where you can’t decide because everything sounds amazing.

The juice bar has every flavour you can imagine, and my partner chose a Garden Brew smoothie – bursting with berries, orange, apple, passionfruit and mango.

I chose the strawberry, hibiscus and rosehip iced tea, served in a deceptively large brass mug which stayed cool to the last drop. the flavours were incredibly good.

Spoilt for choice with options of nasi goreng, rendang, big breakfast, muesli, French toast and ribs, I finally decided on the swimmer crab omelette which was definitely a good choice. Accompanied by a chilli sambal and a beautiful fennel salad, I enjoyed every single mouthful.

My partner chose the Nasi Campur – a veritable collection of beef rendang, chicken satay, rice, fried chicken soft egg and sambal. He said that it was wonderful- the rendang cooked well and all items nicely spicy.

After all that we didn’t have room to sample the cake cabinet so will save that for next time. Chinta serves breakfast, lunch, and high tea. It was a little more expensive than our regular brunches, but definitely well worth it for quality innovative food in a wonderful setting.

Bivouac Canteen and Bar, Northbridge

Bivouac, in the heart of Northbridge on William Street offers a variety of Middle Eastern and Meditteranean fare. The food is designed for sharing, including small plates and larger plates.

We started with a mocktail – a citrus based fruity delight with a hint of sourness.

From the small plate section we chose the Israeli duck liver pate with mustard kasundi, pickles and matzah crackers. This was such a beautiful dish, really rich and flavourful. the pickled radishes were incredibly good.

For larger dishes we chose the 9 spice Palestinian Chicken Musakhan, again a wonderful combination of flavours with fennel, toasted buckwheat and smoked garlic yoghurt.

Mint and chilli eggplant was exquisite. Perfectly cooked eggplant with chickpea msabaha,  herbed vegan yoghurt, fermented paprika, and crispy shallot.

We also chose a Syrian potato salad with fennel, almond, chilli, lemon and herbs – probably the best potato salad I have eaten.

Bivouac really does deliver a feast of flavours, and it’s nice to try dishes from different regions of the middle east – there really is a shortage of restaurants delivering this type of cuisine in Perth. I really couldn’t fault any dish and I will definitely return for more.

Kitsch, Leederville

Kitsch is an Asian style bar and restaurant on Oxford Street, but a bit north of the main strip – close to the Re-store, Pappagallo, Pixel and the Bourke Street community.

We had an early Friday evening booking and were seated at a comfortable table for two. The menu is quite varied with lots of good-sounding options. We chose the lotus chips with wasabi mayo to start. Unfortunately there was no wasabi mayo (we were too early for chef to make it), so we had sriracha chilli mayo, which was nice, but a shame because I was really looking forward to the wasabi, and it would have been nice for them to tell us before delivering the dish.

We chose several plates to share and the first to arrive was a plate of eggplant sambal. The eggplant was well cooked, soft, but not squishy, however the whole dish needed more seasoning.

The next plate contained Korean sweet and salty chicken wings. They were simply delicious – definitely the best dish of the evening. They came with a spicy mayo  and were nice plump and meaty with a gorgeous sticky coating. We were also given some wet towels to wipe our sticky fingers.

Next to arrive was a bowl of spicy mince with green beans – similar to a larb salad. This was tasty and had some nice gravy at the bottom. We didn’t eat it all though – it was good to start but the flavours didn’t carry through for the whole meal and we became a bit bored of it.

Then came crispy skin pork belly in a red thai curry broth with lychees and pineapple. This was another star dish that we really enjoyed. We also had rice to soak up the lovely sauce.

So Kitsch – is it a winner? They definitely have some fabulous dishes, but they also have some mediocre dishes too and it’s not cheap to eat there. The staff were friendly but I found it a bit strange that in an empty restaurant they chose to seat a table of three right next to us when there was plenty of other seating available. It also seems to be a venue where you go for a drink and cocktails, and I heard the lady on the next table singing the praises of the gin. Maybe we’ll give Kitsch another go, but there’s a lot of competition in Perth, so watch this space..

Vans, Cottesloe

I’ve been meaning to try Vans for a long while, and it’s definitely a popular location, situated in Napoleon Street behind Boatshed Markets. I immediately loved the vibe of the cafe – friendly staff, a great looking cake cabinet, jazzy music and nice decor, and it had quite a buzz about it but wasn’t so loud that you needed to shout.

I chose fresh orange to start which was good and vibrant – great flavour.

My partner chose a decaf soy flat white which was smooth and little thin maybe because of the soy.

It was difficult to choose a main – there were way too many delicious options, but in the end I plumped for the potato cake with smoked salmon, spinach and poached egg. It usually comes with lemon butter, but I asked for that to be left off because of my dairy allergy. This dish was perfection on a plate – the potato cake tasty with a bit of crunch, the egg perfectly gooey, and the smoked salmon was good quality fare – not the usual gelatinous packet bought version.

My partner chose the cheesy jalapeno cornbread with bacon, poached eggs, smashed avocado and a black bean and corn salsa. The poached eggs were perfect, the cornbread very tasty and the bacon – like my salmon – was good quality and yummy. There was a nice zingy lime backdrop to the avocado smash.

The cake cabinet looked very tempting but we decided to save that for another day. The raspberry brownies looked particularly good.

 

Vans is definitely worth a try – one of Cottesloe’s jewels.

Shingle Inn, Joondalup

I fancied a sandwich for lunch, and Shingle Inn at Lakeside Mall always has nice gourmet sandwiches. I had eaten here before and found the food a little uncaringly constructed, but decided to give it another go, and this time we were pleasantly surprised.

I chose a turkey and cranberry sandwich on multigrain. They helpfully made it without butter and spread mayo instead. It was really good with a nice quantity of avocado and turkey in the sandwich and a great side salad with honey mustard dressing.

He chose an orange juice. It would have been nice if it were freshly squeezed, but he ended up with a bottled variety.

I chose a mint and lime frappe which was tasty but had a slightly fake manufactured flavour. It would be really easy to make this with fresh lime and mint, but it was okay.

The sandwiches here have definitely improved, but the restaurant still needs some care and organisation. There were lots of tables that needed cleaning and nobody really seemed to be attending to them. It’s nice here but it could be so much better.

Satay On Charcoal, South Perth

Satay on Charcoal is small, and not the easiest restaurant to find, but when you find it, it’s a real treasure because the food is authentic and delicious. It’s on Mends Street but behind the South Shore mall and behind the Windsor Hotel, in the car park, nestled in between the pub and mall next to a pizza joint. We walked past twice before we finally located the cafe.

The seating is all outside but under a canopy, so you won’t get wet if it rains, and it’s very much cheap and cheerful cafe style where you go up and order when you know what you want.

The menu was full of Malaysian favourites and it was really hard to choose because everything sounded lovely, but we went for curry puffs to start and the house special nasi goreng ‘soc’.

The curry puffs were good, thick pastry and a chunky potato filling.

For main I chose the special with chicken rendang. This was accompanied by fried egg, prawn crackers, and chicken satay, The curry was delicious, on the bone, and nicely rich. The satays were out of this world delicious and when I go back, I’ll be having a plate of satays to start!

My partner chose the version with beef rendang, and this was equally amazing, the rendang beautifully cooked to that fall apart melt in the mouth texture.

So will I go back to Satay on Charcoal? Absolutely yes. It’s not the place to wear your finest clothes, but it’s one of the best outlets for Malaysian food in Perth, and the staff are really friendly. They are also open for lunch. Definitely a place where you leave with a smile and a happy tummy.
