It Just Has To Be Delicious

All Things Delicious, Rochor, Singapore

All Things Delicious Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

We popped in to All Things Delicious on Easter Sunday for coffee and cakes. It certainly had a very tempting cake display and as we sat there, several yummy looking cakes and pastries appeared from the kitchen.

The cafe soon filled up and it was buzzing with diners looking forward to their food. Several people seemed to be having the scrambled eggs which looked very nice and is clearly a signature dish.

We ordered coffees which were very nice, but the main reason that I felt compelled to blog this cafe, was the absolutely perfect raspberry chocolate tart.

The pastry was short and tasty, the chocolate filling dark and luscious, and the raspberries soft and slightly sweet. It was an absolute triumph of a cake, definitely worth a visit just for this.

Candlenut, Tanglin, Singapore

Candlenut Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Up on Dempsey Hill in Singapore, there’s a nice little hub of restaurants and a gourmet grocery store – it’s a really chilled place to spend an evening.

In amongst them is Candlenut, a one Michelin star establishment specialising in Peranakan cuisine. It’s a place that although sophisticated, feels comfortable – not too stuffy like some of the other cheffy restaurants.

We started with a glass of Chilean sauvignon blanc while we perused the menu.20190420_205410

We were also given some yummy crispy nibbles and dipping sauce:

It was really hard to choose with lots of tempting options like swimmer crab and chicken balls, crab curry, and beef rib rendang, but we eventually opted for ngoh hiang and pork neck satay to start.

The pork neck satay came first and it was sublime – there was so much flavour in the tender melting pork, and the satay sauce coating was perfect.

I did wonder how good ngoh hiang could be, but this version was amazingly good. The combination of pork, prawn, shiitake mushroom and water chestnut was just right, and I would have been in heaven with several plates of these and nothing else.

For mains we chose the chef’s mum’s chicken curry, “four heavenly kings”, and a king prawn gula melaka. Sorry the pictures are not great – the lighting was dim, and I must have been keen to eat!

The curry was lovely, warm, and rich with potato and kaffir lime, very nice with the brown rice that we ordered.

The four heavenly kings was a combination of eggplant, wing beans, okra and taro, garnished with crispy whitebait. Absolutely wonderful. I could have again eaten several plates of this dish – the perfect vegetable accompaniment.

The king prawn gula melaka was where curry meets dessert – a sweet coconut based curry with beautiful fresh prawns – again a perfect dish.

We didn’t have room for dessert, but this meal was every thing we could have wished for. When we are back in Singapore we will definitely return for more goodies in this sophisticated dining room. A great meal, great service and wonderful atmosphere.

Chatime, Karawara

Chatime Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Chatime is one of several outlets now selling bubble tea in Perth. Bubble tea has really taken off in a big way – you get to choose green or black tea, milk or non-milk, fruit options and then jelly or popping pearls to add another dimension of flavour. The combinations are endless. The tea is then sealed in the contained and you pop your straw in and suck up the jelly pieces with the drink.

Chatime also offers a mousse topping, something that I hadn’t seen at other outlets.

I chose grapefruit green tea with coconut jelly and mousse.

Unfortunately I knocked it over and it went everywhere, all over the table and floor! However the lovely man serving gave me a free replacement tea and he cleared up the horrible mess that I made. I was so embarrassed.

After all of the kerfuffle, I loved my bubble tea – Chatime is a good option, and the staff are great.

This is the version with mousse:

Kitchen Inn Express, Karawara

Kitchen Inn Express Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Kitchen Inn Express is a favourite with the Asian community in Karawara. Situated in Waterford Forum, this cafe serves up the kind of Chinese-Malaysian fare that you would find in Borneo. It’s one of the few places in Perth where you can find good Loh Bak, so obviously we started with a plate.

Crispy, tasty, meaty and with a delicious chilli sauce this was a lovely starter.

I chose fried kway teow as my main, which was full of flavour, had three large juicy prawns and lots of sliced fish cake. It definitely satisfied my hunger.

There was also a pot of rocket hot chilli oil to add some spice.

My partner chose the chicken rendang rice which came with a fried egg – again very tasty with a nice rich sauce.

We’ve been here several times and will definitely go back again when we’re south of the river. It’s casual, cheap and cheerful, and the seating is looking a little tired now, so the restaurant could do with a makeover, however the staff are lovely and it’s a real gem in Karawara.

The Modern Eatery, Mount Lawley

The Modern Eatery Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

The Modern Eatery specialises in aburi sushi – the lovely charred, flame seared sushi that you see in several outlets now. It’s a very clean and minimalist restaurant, more cafe style than first date material.

20190330_183424

We chose a yuzu drink to start with – yuzu, citrus, lime and mint – very refreshing.

20190330_180141

We chose a crunchy salad to open proceedings  – leaves with lotus roots, crunchy sweet potato shreds, and sesame dressing. This was lovely – a nice contrast of flavours and textures.

20190330_180235

Next came a selection of signature aburi sushi, some salmon and some tuna, all really good.

20190330_181606

We finished off with tempura prawns and vegetables, very nicely cooked with a great ponzu dip.

20190330_182606

I loved Modern Eatery – it was clean, tasty and reasonable and the staff were really welcoming. Definitely one of Mount Lawley’s best.

White Salt, Sorrento

White Salt Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

White Salt in Sorrento is a beach cafe in a nice position where you can look out on the ocean. I have been here for evening meals quite a few years ago, but decided to give the cafe a go for breakfast.

The first thing that we noticed was the service, it wasn’t really happening, and despite booking in advance, we stood at the reception area for a good five minutes before anybody acknowledged us. Eventually we were seated by the window at a good table, but slightly let down by the grubby appearance of the window area and the sticky table. Tables need a good clean between guests, not just a cursory wipe, and it wasn’t very comforting to have a sticky table.

Anyway, we ordered drinks. My partner chose a soy decaf in a mug (which we noticed was an extra $1.50 – 50c each for soy, decaf and the mug!), I asked for the peanut butter and banana smoothie with coconut milk, but unfortunately there wasn’t any coconut milk, so I settled for almond milk.20190413_093625

The smoothie was a little disappointing, not really flavoursome from the banana or the peanut butter, all a bit bland. My partner’s coffee was okay.

20190413_093808

For main I chose the sweet potato and quinoa hash with bacon, spinach and poached egg. This was nice, the bacon was good, the portion of hash was quite small though. The tomatoes add a nice piquant flavour.

20190413_094718

My partner chose the cassoulet with pork and fennel sausages and poached egg. Again this was nice, but quite meat heavy as the cassoulet contained meat.

20190413_094715

So did we like White Salt? It was okay, but nothing special, and it really needs a good clean. I think I prefer the menu options at Voyage Kitchen next door – Voyage was packed out, White Salt had tables to spare – it’s quite obvious why really.
