It Just Has To Be Delicious

Como Garden, Como

I think that Como Garden is fairly new. I saw some posts on Instagram and the food looked amazing so we paid the restaurant a visit after a Sunday morning park walk. It’s on Melville Parade just across from the freeway and overlooking the Swan River. There are tables both outside and inside, and we were seated fairly quickly. We chose some food from the trolleys but also ordered some items that I had been looking forward to. The restaurant makes it’s own dumplings and many of them are signature dishes.

First choices were Har Gow (prawn) and Scallop dumplings from the trolley.

For steamed dumplings these were probably the best we have ever tasted. You could really taste the scallop, it wasn’t mixed in with prawn, and the Har Gow were packed with prawn, absolutely delicious. I usually order my Har Gow with Sui Mai because they traditionally go together, but decided to save room for other tasty dishes.

Next came glutinous rice dumplings Ham Sui Gok (affectionately known as footballs). If you haven’t tried these, you really should – they are usually minced pork with veggies, and the signature Como Garden version have preserved vegetables in them. They were also really light and not stodgy like others can be. Very very good footballs.

Then came the signature brown rice flour rolls stuffed with prawn in cruller pastry. Such a lovely version of rice flour rolls (which can often be all roll and no filling), and with a nice soy dressing.

Finally one of our favourites – fired radish cake in XO sauce. So umami, beautiful soft radish cake with a crispy edge, and a burst of XO flavour. Probably the best radish cake I have tasted.

Como Garden oozed quality from start to finish, even the jasmine tea tasted better than other restaurants (and $1 per person – not like the $4 per person I have been charged at Emperor’s Kitchen). Every dish was delicious, with generous fillings, quality ingredients, what’s not to like? I’ll be back.

NextDoor, Como

NextDoor is a trendy restaurant and bar in the Angelo Street Market area of Como. It’s right next door to Olsen’s butchers, so they have a good supply of quality meats, and this shows by the superb wagyus, ribeyes, and scotch fillets available on the special meat menu.

As soon as you walk in it is oozing with sophistication, and we were seated around the grill bar so that we could watch the chefs preparing the meat and fish dishes.

The menu is based on share plates – snacks, small plates, larger plates and vegetables. I started proceedings with a Vignarosa prosecco while we perused the options.

Our first choice was a small selection of coldcuts with marinated olives and guindilla (chillies), along with some focaccia. This was a good choice – the coldcuts were such good quality and so incredibly tasty – salami, mortadella, parma ham with succulent olives. It was all quite filling.

Next came our small plates – first hashbrown with cod roe whip, pickle powder, chives and smoked trout roe, then chicken wings stuffed with prawns, topped with pickles and a honey/chilli coating. Both were very satisfying. The soft hashbrown with the smoky rish roe flavours took us to umami central, and the contrast of the chilli and sweetness of the chicken wings was sublime.

The main dish was market fish – crimson snapper, served with the heirloom carrots and kipfler and sweet potatoes. The snapper was served in a tomato butter with roast cherry tomatoes. The carrots on a bed of labne with candied hazelnuts and honeycomb, the potatoes flavoured with garlic and rosemary.

Nextdoor is definitely a quality venue with dishes lovingly prepared by talented chefs. It’s a little expensive, so more of a special occasion restaurant, but an absolute neighbourhood gem in South Perth.

High Tea – the Treasury Lounge at the Como, Perth CBD

Treasury Lounge and Bar Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

The Treasury Lounge at the Como Hotel is set in the State Buildings on St George’s Terrace. Steeped in history, the lounge is elegant and sophisticated, and we were seated at a table overlooking the terrace and the Council House.

Afternoon tea must be booked in advance and can be taken with a glass of Taittinger Brut Reserve champagne, a glass of sparkling Great Southern Australian wine (from Denmark), or alcohol free. All versions include unlimited Mano a Mano coffee, and tea, with a choice of Assam breakfast, Earl Grey, chai, peppermint, oolong, white peony, jasmine pearls or long jing with teas supplied by Jing. Prices range from $55 to $80 per person.
We settled in with some tea – I chose jasmine pearls which arrived in a see through pot, and as the tea brewed the pearls opened up in the most beautiful way.

Assam breakfast tea was clean and nicely flavoured, arriving in a more traditional pot.

The menu is designed around the best local ingredients, and I chose to suffer my sneezes
and go with a traditional menu rather than choose a non-dairy version. I did ask them to
leave the quail egg off my egg sandwich though as I am severely allergic to quail eggs.
The savouries were perfection. Egg mayonnaise sandwich with caviar (and quail egg if you eat them), made with Baldivis free range eggs; a shark bay prawn roll with wasabi tobiko and kipfler chips; roast chicken, smoked bacon (from Linley Valley pork) and vintage cheddar roulade.

The quality of the ingredients was clear with strong fresh flavours, and so much care in the presentation. Next came wonderful light scones – one plain and one with sultanas, cream and jam – again a really pleasurable experience.

The cakes were the crowning glory of the afternoon tea – all very thoughtful creations,
again using local ingredients.

11

The Tarte au Citron, using lemons from Gingin, consisted of a hazelnut sable biscuit base
with topped with citrus cream, Swiss meringue and a zingy citrus compote.

12

The gold dusted profiterole hid a coffee cremeaux, a dulce de leche and caramelized pecan – beans supplied by WA coffee roasters Mano a Mano.13

The mandarin mousse made with mandarins from Moora, consisted of almond biscuit,
streusel, mandarin toffee, Bavarian chocolate and feather light mandarin mousse.

Every mouthful was delicious and this is certainly one of the best afternoon teas in Perth.
The thought and care that has gone in to each creation is clear – a real Treasury of taste.
