Miller and Baker, Northbridge

Miller and Baker Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

mb 1

Miller and Baker is on Lake Street, not far from Sayer’s Sister, and always seems to have a crowd outside. It’s easy to see why – Miller and Baker have to be the best bakery around, milling their own flour and making superb loaves and pastries.

mb 7

As you walk in the bread smells amazing and the array of pastries, savouries makes you want to have one of each.

mb 5

Coffee is also really good – beans roasted by Five Senses and Offshoot – you can tell that the staff here make an artform of absolutely everything they sell.

I love Miller and Baker and regularly make the 40 minute car journey just to smell and savour the best baked goods in town.

Lawleys Bakery Cafe, North Beach

Lawley's Bakery Café Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Just a quick review here of Lawleys at North Beach. This is one of several Lawleys outlets in Perth and has the advantage of being close to the ocean, just a little back on Flora Terrace, which is quite lively at weekends with neighbouring Tropico offering great brunches.
As soon as we walked in, we noticed an array of bread, savouries, pastries and cakes. Looking at the menu, Lawleys offer some fairly regular breakfast options, but after seeing the wonderful subs and sandwiches, we couldn’t resist giving them a try. It was nearly lunchtime and a sandwich seemed more appropriate than a brekkie style meal.

I chose turkey, cranberry and brie on dark rye.

This was a great sandwich, plenty of turkey, not too much cranberry, nice ripe brie, and a suitable helping of salad leaves. the bread was delicious too and the quality shone through. My partner chose a continental roll on a white baguette.

law 2

Again the bread was superb, the ham and salami were delicious, and the cheese melted temptingly in the middle.
The selection of cakes available here is wonderful – danish pastries, slices, scrolls, buns, sponges and tortes. The hot cabinet contains fresh and appealing pies and sausage rolls, and the cold cabinet contains a great selection of sandwiches, wraps and rolls. I must come back to report on the other yummy options.

Chu Bakery, Highgate

Chu Bakery Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Chu is a great place to pick up a cake for afternoon tea.

chu 1

It’s a small-ish takeaway bakery on William Street just opposite Hyde Park, and being a Sunday afternoon, I didn’t imagine that they would have a fully stocked cabinet, but it was lovely to see some exquisite options in there.

chu 2

Their signature choux puffs were available in raspberry and lychee flavour and matcha green tea and yuzu. Beautiful eclairs in burnt honey and praline flavours, and wonderful slices of vanilla and orange, and chocolate mousse.
The doughnuts also looked incredibly good. Salted caramel, boston cream with chocolate, cinnamon, and lemon. Then also a wonderful array of savouries and toasties.

chu 3

We were there for the cakes though, and after much deliberation I chose a burnt honey cream eclair. The choux pastry was perfect with a generous filling of honey cream and a beautiful glossy chocolate ganache icing. Total yum.

chu 4

My partner chose the vanilla and orange slice. A layer of moist orange and almond cake with a beautiful marmalade-y flavour, topped with a light and creamy vanilla mousse. Again the verdict was yum.

If you are ever in Highgate, pop into Chu. It’s a little expensive but very very worth it.
