Peninsula Tea Gardens, Maylands

Peninsula Tea Gardens is situated at a pleasant leafy spot on the Swan River at Maylands, next to Tranby House and on the site of Peninsula Farm (one of the first colonial farms in Perth). It’s a popular place for hen parties and baby showers and they do not charge corkage, so there were plenty of champagne corks popping when we visited.
We chose the standard Parisian High Tea. Peninsula provide two serves of drinks with this and you can choose from a variety of loose leaf teas, coffee, sparkling juice and iced drinks.
I chose the Lovers Leap tea which was a caramel floral option. When the three tiered high tea arrived it looked appetising and carefully put together.

The first layer consisted of 4 varieties of sandwich and a meat pie each. Sandwiches were ham and egg with Dijon mustard, beef and horseradish cream cheese, garlic herb chicken with avocado sour cream, and smoked salmon, cucumber and mayonnaise. My favourite was the garlic herb chicken, and although the pie could have been any supermarket party pie, it was nonetheless tasty and the pastry was nice.

The next layer consisted of a large scone each with cream and jam. The scones were a good recipe, great consistency and the jam and cream were good quality. We didn’t have enough jam and cream for everybody, but they provided additional portions when asked.

By now we were getting fairly full and ordered another drink before moving on to the cake layer. I ordered an iced coffee, which was a little weak and milky, but the ice cream was luscious.
The cake layer consisted of 4 cakes each – a macaron, an oblong raspberry biscuit, a lemon meringue pie and a cup cake. The cupcake was really nicely textured, soft and spongy, and the macaron was perfect. The meringue was nicely presented but nothing special, and the raspberry biscuit was again well presented but could have had a stronger raspberry flavour.

All in all it was a very pleasant high tea, the waitresses were very helpful and the location was lovely. All served up on Royal Albert bone china complete with tea strainers and silver napkin rings. They also provided take away boxes for the left over cakes. One of the nicest high teas in Perth with a great view of the river.

The Swan, Lavenham, UK for afternoon tea

The Swan is a hotel in the beautiful mediaeval village of Lavenham in Suffolk. The whole village is quaint and picturesque and the inside of the Swan has a sense of old world charm and splendour. This afternoon tea was a birthday treat for a relative and it certainly did not disappoint.
The Swan offers three types of afternoon tea – traditional, savoury and high tea. The high tea includes a substantial savoury starter such as scotch egg with crushed peas or smoked salmon and chive omelette, followed by two different scones and a selection of cakes. The traditional afternoon tea features finger sandwich slices followed by two different scones and a selection of cakes. The savoury afternoon tea features finger sandwiches, two savoury scones and a selection of savoury pastries such as smoked salmon and crab blinis
and coronation chicken tart. There is also a tea menu, offering a variety of different teas including English breakfast, Earl Grey, fruit teas, lapsang souchong, darjeeling and oolong.

The finger sandwiches included traditional cucumber, dill and black pepper, maple roast Suffolk ham, egg and light mustard mayonnaise, and smoked salmon with creme fraiche served on a beetroot bread. When we had finished, the waitress asked if we would like a further round of sandwiches for the table, quite a nice touch when other establishments seem to have strict portion control. We were also offered more than one pot of tea, and as much jam and cream for the scones as we liked – it was nice to know that we could really
enjoy the food on offer.

Two types of scone were offered – walnut and fruit – and they were both delicious. the cream was clotted cream and the jam seemed to be freshly home made, offered in both raspberry and strawberry flavours.

Because it was Wimbledon fortnight, the cakes had a Wimbledon theme. This included a battenburg that was designed to look like a tennis court, strawberry and cream panacotta, a Pimms jelly cup with a green pistachio tennis ball macaron, and a victoria sponge with a chocolate decoration.

Every item served was beautifully presented and tasty with quality ingredients. We were allowed to take our time, and the setting added to the whole experience. Of all the high teas I have tasted this was definitely one of the best and when I am next in Suffolk, I will definitely return.

Bites By D, Mount Hawthorn

Bites By D Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

This is an updated blog post about Bites by D, because I am already a fan, but for the first time I went to this beautiful cake shop for High Tea.
Bites is not a licensed venue, so you can bring your own bubbles, but if you
forget there’s a liquor store nearby that gives discount for Bites by D customers. Everything on the table was set out perfectly, and the fine china looked really great.

The tea menu contains a good selection of loose leaf teas from T2, and when you order, the pot is quite generous. The High Tea includes unlimited tea and coffee, which you can order at any time.
The savouries platter included a lovely risoni pasta salad in a pot, and exquisite beetroot cream tart with pastry to die for, a beef slider, and a pumpkin scone with cream cheese and chive spread.

It took quite a while to chomp our way through the savouries, and they were so so nice, the scones perfectly baked, and everything was made with care and finesse. After the savouries, we were presented with a raspberry sorbet, topped with freeze dried raspberries. This was lovely and bursting with raspberry goodness.

Nothing could prepare us for the beauty of the sweet platter – oh my goodness, every piece looked so appetising.

6

The top layer contained a rich buttery friand, topped with strawberry and buttercream, and a profiterole with a crunchy surface known as a choux au craquelin. Both of these were light and delicious.

7

The bottom layer contained the signature summer delight which is gluten free, layers of vanilla and lemon Bavarian cream, almond and pistachio biscuit, raspberry and strawberry jelly. The star item for me was the golden chocolate cube with chocolate crumb, chocolate mousse, salted caramel cremeux, all dipped in chocolate and topped with meringue, raspberry and a golden praline.
They also provided a cupcake for my partner who was celebrating a birthday.

We definitely felt very special having High Tea at Bites By D. This is definitely one of the best venues for afternoon tea in Perth.
This is my first blog post which I posted in 2017:
Ever since leaving Brisbane, I have been looking for a patisserie to match the finesse of Le Bon Choix. There are plenty of cake shops in Perth, but so far nothing has displayed the attention to detail and aesthetic pleasure that LBC did. Then I discovered Bites by D, a shop in Mount Hawthorn on Scarborough Beach Road and oh my goodness this place delivers.

9

We selected a toffee crunch eclair and a Ferrero Rocher cupcake. The eclair had a wonderful gooey but not too sweet salted caramel filling, great pastry with a lovely crunchy nut topping.

The cup cake was like a cross between a cup cake and a brownie, wonderfully moist with a quality chocolate cream inside. Very nice.

There is seating in the shop so you can sit and have a drink with your cake, and they also offer high tea, which sounds amazing. I can’t wait to go back for more. Well we did go back for more and I took some better photos. I had coffee which was lovely – Five Senses.
