It Just Has To Be Delicious

Propeller, North Fremantle

Propeller is a great venue tucked away on Queen Victoria Street in North Fremantle. It’s a nicely designed building with a quaint sea container for a bar, and there is seating inside and outside. We came for brunch and were impressed by the range of options on the menu. We ordered coffees while we mused over the choices and coffee was delicious – beans provided by Twin Peaks.

pr 2

I was very tempted to try the rose rhubarb apple porridge, the chocolate, date and pear brik, or the mushrooms on toast with lentils, but I decided on the sardine brik for something a little different.

pr 3

This dish was packed with flavour. The slow roast tomatoes were rich, the sardines good quality, the egg was just oozy and the pickles added a nice piquancy. The brik pastry stuffed with potatoes had a nice texture, and herbs added another layer. These flavours were strong and punchy, but not so overwhelming that I couldn’t finish, and I loved the way that the dish set me up for the day. It was really delicious.

My partner chose the turkish spiced baked beans with duck egg, kale and grilled bread.

pr 4

The bread was absolutely delicious, the beans nicely cooked, again big rich flavours with the spices and kale adding depth. A citrus backdrop gave it freshness. We loved Propeller. It’s not your regular breakfast venue, and all of the flavours are great. We also chose a brownie and chocolate almond croissant for afternoon tea at home, and they were equally great quality. We’ll be back.

Petite Mort, Shenton Park

Petite Mort opened in 2011 on the site of the old favourite Star Anise in Onslow Road, Shenton Park. Run by New Zealander Todd Stuart, Petite Mort is renowned as one of Perth’s finest fine dining establishments.
I don’t know why it took me so long to visit, maybe it was the restriction of only having a degustation menu at the weekend, but as it was our anniversary we decided to celebrate in style and the degustation seemed perfect. As we are now both intolerant to too much dairy, I emailed ahead to ask about the dairy
content of the menu and Todd was most helpful in his reply giving me an approximate percentage of dairy in each course, he offered suitable alternatives, and gave me the heads up about which items we might want to go easy on.
When we arrived the restaurant was buzzing with conversation. It’s a classy establishment with interesting artwork mounted on rough brick walls. Unlimited still and sparkling water is included in the price of the degustation menu, and there’s an option where you can have wine matching. We chose to have glass of wine to start, but in future I will definitely try the wine matched menu – looking at neighbouring diners, the matched wines seemed generous and varied.
We chose a cremant wine to start, not too different from a champagne, a little less effervescent but still with the biscuity edge and dry fruit that champagnes carry – we really enjoyed it.

pm 1

Bread was lovingly prepared and tasty – we had a French baguette slice and sun dried tomato bread. The waitress exchanged our butter for olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

pm 2

The first course of the degustation soon arrived – a butternut pumpkin veloute poured over coconut, squid and nam jim. Wow what a start. Who knew that soup could be so special. Every element added value to the dish – the heat from the nam jim, the sweetness of the pumpkin, the soft coconut cream, the texture of the squid. It truly was a great dish, and the bread came in handy to soak up every last morsel of the veloute.

pm 3

Next came another triumph – Cured salmon, wasabi sorbet, wakame (seaweed) and ponzu, served with a rice cracker. Again every taste and texture added something and the wasabi sorbet was a standout item – not too hot but intense enough to know that it was wasabi. We now knew that this meal was going to be something special.

pm 4

The next dish was a palate cleanser – a pineapple sorbet with pineapple pieces, tapioca and a dash of Angostura bitters. There was nothing plain about this palate cleanser, it was exquisite – everything had been well thought out, and it was a lovely refresher.

pm 5

The first of the main courses was pork belly with pomelo, avocado and corn. The pork was presented as a slice of crispy roast pork belly – one of my favourites plus an amazing croquette of pork that had a wonderful intense and rich flavour. Corn was presented in 3 ways – as a mini cob, as char grilled kernels and as popcorn, and everything was set on a bed of avocado puree with a gorgeous blob of pomelo reduction.

pm 6

The next main course consisted of beef, potato pave, quail egg and onion jam. I asked for my quail egg to be left off (because I am very allergic to quail eggs), so the photo is of my partner’s dish. The beef came as a succulent round fillet and piece of rich slow cooked brisket. The potato pave was small, but packed a punch with its intense earthy flavour (potatoes are my favourite vegetable), and definitely brought a dreamy smile to my face. It was topped with a delicate lacy tuile and accompanied by bearnaise sauce. Wow yet another stunning dish.

pm 7

For the next main dish we had a choice of fish or duck and I chose the fish – barramundi with olive, witlof, beetroot an dill. The braised witlof was the most delicious form of witlof that I have ever tried, sitting atop the fresh sweet barramundi, with blobs of beetroot and dill, pieces of olive, and a wonderful radish pickle. A lovely symphony of flavours.

pm 8

My partner chose the duck with fig, buttermilk and pumpkin. This included a delicious confit and a juicy tender breast fillet on top of pumpkin and fig pieces and a pumpkin puree. He thoroughly enjoyed the dish.

pm 9

Next came a pre-dessert palate cleanser – a hazelnut sorbet with other seeds and nuts and some puffed rice. Simple and smooth, this was a good palate reset before the main dessert.

pm 10

The main dessert was Todd’s signature dish – death by chocolate – consisting of chocolate macaron, a white chocolate coated truffle, a dark chocolate truffle, a brownie, chocolate mousse, raspberry sorbet and aerated chocolate sitting atop chocolate soil and butterscotch sauce. This dessert was special and memorable and finished off a wonderful meal, or so we thought – there was still more to come….

pm 11

We didn’t choose to have tea or coffee, but the wait staff brought box of petit fours – a cookie, a madeleine and a macaron. More exquisite goodies that we polished off despite being very full.

pm 12

It’s not often that we eat a meal where every course is perfectly constructed for texture and flavour, but this meal was faultless from start to finish. The staff were knowledgeable and helpful, and the evening was well paced. I will definitely return for more of this outstanding food finery. Absolutely amazing.

We have revisited several times and found that Todd will happily adapt menus to include vegan and vegetarian options.

The last visit in March 2021 was absolutely outstanding – fantastic crab bisque with lobster and cured fish with wasabi sorbet just a few of the highlights. Consistency is a key feature of this excellent restaurant.

Mullaloo Beach Hotel, Mullaloo

We popped into Mullaloo for breakfast at the weekend. We hadn’t been to Mullaloo Beach Hotel for some years, and the last breakfast experience was not a good one, but we decided to give it another try.
As we arrived we were informed that breakfast was finishing in 20 minutes, so with some urgency we took our seats by the window and chose from the menu. The menu is great for diners with food allergies. There are lots of options as well as a whole separate vegan menu. There was a bit of a muddle with our coffee order, but when we eventually received the correct drinks, they were quite good.

mbh 1
mbh 2

We chose the dairy free vegan pancakes from the vegan menu with caramelised banana. The pancakes were really good for vegan pancakes – light and fluffy, the coconut ice cream was delicious, and the caramelised banana gooey and sweet. I would have liked some more nut and coconut sprinkles, but on the whole it was a really good brunch.

mbh 3

Mullaloo Beach Hotel has great views and not a massive amount of competition locally, but it is looking old and tired and in need of refurbishment. The toilets were a bit grim, which is never a good sign, but the food did taste nice and I was happy with the options. The staff were lovely – it’s a nice venue, but has the potential to be so much more than this.

Mashawi, Currambine

Mashawi in Currambine is the newest branch of the Middle-Eastern Mount Lawley favourite, and perched above Farmer Jack’s it has a sumptuous interior with both balcony and interior tables. Staff are friendly, and the menu is large and varied with kebabs, tagines, and a surprisingly good variety of vegetarian options.
We were given a basket of breads, crispbreads, olives and pickles while we read the menu, but we ate them before I could take a photo. I chose a glass of Castelli gewurztraminer to start and it had a complex fruity, rose, and orange bouquet, typical of the perfumed aroma that the grape variety yields.

ma 5

We decide to share the lamb and okra tagine on couscous – this was rich and delicious – perfectly cooked.

ma 6

We also chose chicken skewers with chips and salad – we could have had rice, but it was a chippie kind of day. There were two skewers, but again, we ate one beofre remembering to take a picture. The chicken was meltingly delicious, and well-marinated.

ma 7

I like Mashawi – it’s got something for everybody – great food, well presented, and friendly staff.

This is the review from another visit:

Mashawi continues to be a firm favourite for middle eastern fare in Currambine.
Vegetarian and vegan options are plentiful, although they have stopped providing pickles with the breads which is a shame. Hummus and baba ghanoush are great dip options, and vegan soups also appear on the menu.

ma 1
ma 2

Hot tapas include a vegan moussaka and shakshouka, although we found the okra a little disappointing.

ma 3

There are several vegan tagines and our favourite is mujaddara, rice and lentils with caramelised onions and crispy cauliflower.

ma 4

Other tagine options include vegetable couscous, cauliflower and potato, sweet potato and zucchini, and black fez (tomatoes and eggplant with couscous).
Mashawi also provide non dairy smoothies. Lots of great options for plant based dining here.

Nasi Lemak Corner, Como

I managed to get past my annoyance that they spelled corner with a ‘k’ (pet hate of mine), and decided to book a table. It’s in a busy little area of Como with shops and a cinema close by. There are high and low tables, and it’s a BYO establishment.

nlc 1

The menu is full of tempting Malaysian favourites, and we chose fairly traditional dishes. We started with a chicken satay (3 sticks per serve). This was nice, good satay with juicy chicken, but I have had a lot of satay before and it wasn’t the best or tastiest version I have ever tried. It was a good start to the meal though.

nlc 2

We also chose some drinks – the sour cherry and lime drink. This was more sweet than sour and full of ‘ais’ which was quite nice as it melted into the flavours.

nlc 3

I chose good old nasi lemak for my main with the chicken sambal. The waitress warned me that it would be hot and spicy, but I decide to go with it anyway. It was hot, but also quite sweet. The chicken had been cooked for a while and had lost some of it’s juiciness, but I did eat it all. The dish was accompanied by the traditional, egg, cucumber, anchovies, peanuts, and sambal sauce – flavours and textures which all work well together. If I tried this dish again, I would choose a different protein style – maybe the fried chicken or the beef rendang because the chicken was a too sweet for my tastes.

nlc 4

My partner chose the beef rendang with rice. This was beautifully cooked and tender, rich and moderately spicy, a very nice version of rendang – this was the best dish on the table. The rice was served with pickles and sambal sauce.

nlc 5
nlc 6

We also chose some roti breads served with the traditional lentil (dhal) dip. They were nice and a good contrast to the spice, but again, not the most amazing roti I have ever tried.

nlc 7

When I booked, I was informed that I could have the table for 90 minutes, so it’s not the kind of place that guests linger. The tables are quite small and the seats are not the most comfortable, however, it is a very popular local cafe and definitely hits the mark by giving guests a taste of Malaysia (which is quite scarce in Perth). Our neighbours on the next table chose the murtabak and a lovely looking laksa soup with crispy prawns on top – I definitely had food envy from their choices.
So, will I return ? I’m not sure I’ll rush back here, but if I am in the area, I will definitely pop in to try some of the other offerings.

Old Faithful, Perth CBD

Old Faithful is a pub and BBQ restaurant at the Wellington Street end of King Street. Walking in, it looks like a typical bar with wooden tables and chairs, and we received a friendly greeting as we were allocated a table.
The menu is full of grill bar favourites, ribs, burgers, sandwiches etc. and there are beer specials on the chalkboard.
We chose to share a rack of pork ribs, 100g of brisket, fries, coleslaw and pickles. The food arrived on a platter to share, and everything was full of flavour.

of 1

The brisket was the star with a lovely smoky flavour, and the smoked and char grilled ribs were really good, although just a little longer would have seen the meat falling off the bone. They were the kind of ribs that you have to chew off the bone. Nonetheless, the ribs were full of flavour, very slightly dry, but I think that was due to the cooking method.
Fries were spicy and tasty, coleslaw was good quality and the pickles all disappeared very quickly thanks to my pickle-addict companion. I really enjoyed Old Faithful and will definitely return for more barbecue creations.

Neho Asian Tapas, East Victoria Park

Absolutely everything about Neho is fun. Booking is easy – online, no fuss, the wait staff are lovely, and the quirky signs and decor of the place puts you right into a carefree, fun state of mind before you even look at the menu.

neho 1
neho 2

The signs are great examples of how meaning gets ‘lost in translation’, and the owners have chosen some really funny illustrations of this.
Before ordering we were presented with a bowl of great crispy prawn crackers which had a superb intense flavour and got our tastebuds tingling. The drinks menu is full of wonderful choices and great cocktails – we chose a Great Southern Riesling which was apple-y, slightly smouldering and a little musty, a fine example of how many keynote flavours a Riesling can have and very good value for $11 – very very drinkable.

neho 3
neho 4

The menu is tapas style as the name of the restaurant suggests with small plates and large plates all designed for sharing. We really wanted to try everything, it all sounded so yummy, and there’s also a ‘feed me’ option where you can let the chef choose for you, but we plumped for 3 small dishes, a veggie dish and a main dish. The waitress thought we might not manage it all, but we decided to give it a go and get a doggie bag if we had leftovers.
The first dish to arrive was a duo of Macao pork sliders with Toasted Brioche, Crumbed Pork, Garlic Aioli, Pineapple Relish, Lettuce. They were really tasty, lovely tender pork and great aioli, and I did wonder if were going to manage all of the meal as they were very satisfying.

neho 5

Next came the garlic tomyum prawns. Three giant prawns that had been split and grilled with a tomyum oil, coconut cream and herbs. So crispy and delicious that I ate some of the shell as well.

neho 6

The meal was nicely paced and the wait staff held back on other items until we had finished what was on the table – I like this approach – much better than having a table full of food that you are racing to eat before it all gets cold.
The next dish was an absolute star – Folded Arms in Red Oil – Pork & Cabbage Dumplings, Szechuan Chilli Dressing, Chilli & Scallion. We could have eaten a trough of these – they were so good.

neho 7

For the fourth dish we ordered Cauliflower goreng – Deep Fried Cauliflower, Pickle Shallots, Sambal Aioli, Pork Crackling. This was an absolute revelation. Who thought that cauliflower could taste so wonderful, and the crackling was beautifully crisp – probably my favourite dish of the evening.

neho 8

The last dish was the signature 36 hour rendang ribs – 36 Hour Beef Short Ribs, Rendang Curry, Toasted Coconut. The waitress suggested a rice accompaniment which was perfect because we needed something to soak up the lovely rendang sauce. We were full, but couldn’t stop eating these amazing ribs – wow – what a dish.

neho 9
neho 10

We were really keen to try the desserts, but we simply had no room left in our tummies. We will be back to try the banana doughnut, the pandan panacotta or the creme caramel custard cake very soon. This is one of Perth’s finest – make sure you give it a try.

Lot One, Hillarys

Away from the main resort area of Hillarys, along Whitfords Avenue at the corner of Angove Drive, sits Lot One Kitchen, a busy cafe with seating inside and out. We arrived on a blustery Sunday morning and it was full. We were glad that we had booked and secured a table inside.
The menu had the usual favourites – eggs benny, full brekkie, pancakes, french toast etc. and some brunch options too. There were also specials on the board, and some breakfast cocktails (it’s a licensed cafe). We ordered coffee, which unusually arrived after the food. The coffee was okay, but a little bitter (or maybe burnt) for my liking. I don’t usually add sugar to coffee, but I did sweeten this cup.

lo 1

I chose the brisket hash with zucchini, capsicum, fried egg and chimichurri. It was nice, the brisket was fall-apart tender, and the egg nicely runny. It sat atop a hash brown which was soft mash potato with a crispy edge, which also had a hint of cheese about it.

lo 2

My partner chose ‘The Lot’ breakfast with tasty sausage, maple bacon, poached eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, house made beans, hash brown and ciabatta. He really enjoyed it – a lovely breakfast. The beans really stood out, and could have formed a dish on their own with some chorizo and eggs.

lo 3

The cafe is very noisy and we were seated quite close to the counter, so we had a constant flow of people and wait staff pushing past which did detract from our enjoyment quite a bit. We also felt a bit rushed – our dishes and cups were whisked away as soon as they were empty and the staff kept asking if we wanted anything else. As soon as we stood up, another couple were seated before we’d even paid our bill.
The array of savouries, cakes and muffins looked good.

lo 4

This cafe is a good option if you want something away from the main Hillarys area, and the food was nice quality, but it’s not the best place for conversation due to the noise. I wonder if with a bit of thought the tables could be arranged in a better format to avoid that awkward claustrophobic feeling when people are standing too close. They serve dinner too – maybe we’ll try dinner one evening.

lo 5

We paid another visit to Lot One for coffee and cake. This was a bit better than our previous visit, but there were a few things that I didn’t like.
My partner ordered a cup of tea which came up in a mug with a lid and a tea strainer inside, and the waitress had to explain how to use the cup. A regular pot and/or tea strainer would have been fine, or even a teabag and a pot of hot water because it was stewed to death and didn’t taste too great. The tea also dribbled everywhere out of the strainer and left a puddle on the table.

lo 6
lo 7

We both had the peanut butter and chocolate brownie which was very nice – quite a dense brownie rather than a gooey one, but nice flavours.

lo 8

My main gripe was that the food sat on the counter for quite a while before it came to our table. There were flies and bugs around, and I think the delay is what caused the tea to be over-brewed. I think I might give Lot One a miss in the future – there are better cafes.

Lo Quay, Wilson

lq 1

Lo Quay is in an excellent location by the river at Wilson. Even on a winter’s day it was pleasant to sit outside and the staff helpfully lit the gas heaters to keep us comfortable. Dogs are also welcome at the outside tables, which was great because our friend Kaz has a new dog who was keen to join us.

lq 2

The menu is basic breakfast fare and we chose coffees while we deliberated. The soy cappucino was delicious, smooth and just chocolatey enough. The soy decaf flat white was equally good.

For my food I chose a bruschetta with tomato, avocado rocket and shaved parmesan. This was really good.

lq 5

My partner chose the zucchini and corn fritters with poached eggs. Interspersed with rocket, avocado and feta, they were very tasty and the eggs delightfully gooey.

lq 6

Kaz also had the fritters. I chose fresh orange as another drink during the meal, and it was a wonderful mix of orange and mandarin which gave the drink a lovely mixed citrus flavour.

lq 7

We really enjoyed our breakfast by the river, and Briar agrees that we should go back soon for another great meal.

Sawadee, West Leederville

Sawadee is an unassuming Thai restaurant in a bit of an out of the way place on Harrogate Street in West Leederville. It’s friendly and welcoming with nice clean decor.

sa 1

The menu has many of the traditional Thai favourites, and it’s a licensed premises with some good wine choices.

sa 2

We chose the Tung Tong pork and peanut parcels to start. Lovely delicate dumplings with a great sauce and served on lettuce leaves (also great to wrap the dumplings in the leaves).

sa 3

We also had the grilled barramundi with tamarind sauce – another winner – great fresh fish and good tamarind flavour.

sa 4

The star of the meal was the green chicken curry – a beautiful thick sauce with plenty of chicken, great with simple boiled rice.

sa 5
sa 6

This is a neighbourhood gem – it’s a shame that the location isn’t more prominent, but if you are seeking good traditional Thai, give Sawadee a try.
