La Vida Urbana, Leederville

La Vida Urbana Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Urbana is a sister restaurant to El Publico in Mount Lawley, and is situated in Carr Place, Leederville, quite close to Sayers and Duende. The food is authentic Mexican, and if you love Tequila, Mescal and Agave spirits, this is definitely the place for you.
1

We started off with a Hibiscus soda and a glass of Riesling. Both nice drinks while we perused the menu.

Most of the starters are tacos of differing types, but they also serve nachos, black bean dip and chicharron (puffed pork crackling). We opted for a few tacos – the carnitas taco with salsa roja, pineapple and chicharron, and the battered fish taco with cucumber, avocado, and charred lemon. They arrived with two tortillas, but both tortillas were underneath a heap of filling. It would have been easier to share if each tortilla had filling on top, but we worked it out and divided them up.
4

We also received some chilli jam and hot green sauce.
5

Both tacos were really tasty, but the hot green sauce (which was very hot) and the chilli jam were the stars – wow such lovely beautifully put together condiments. We also chose street corn which was amazing. If you are wondering how good corn can be, well this is the dish to prove that it can be incredibly good. Perfectly cooked and charred corn with queso fresco on top. Absolutely yum. (Unfortunately dairy doesn’t agree with me and I did suffer a bit the next day due to the queso fresco, and if they could prepare this dish with vegan cheese, I would be in heaven).

6

Next came the kingfish crudo. with orange, habanero, mezcal, hibiscus and tostadas. The waiter helpfully showed us how to dip the crispy tostadas (crispy tacos) into the sauce to wet them before loading up with the fish. This dish was sublime and I loved every mouthful. My only bugbear is that they gave us just 3 tostadas. We could have had two each really, and a bit of care from the waitstaff and kitchen would have made this much easier to share. I didn’t touch the sliced habaneros – I’ve had those sneaky little chillies before and unless your chilli game is really strong, they will leave you with a long lasting mouth tingle.
7
8

Our last dish was the chicken mole as recommended by the waitress. Beautifully tender and moist chicken breast (I think it had been cooked sous-vide and then pan fried), with a mole sauce, red arroz and tortillas. The mole sauce was bittersweet and a good contrast to the rest of the ingredients.
9

This was a very good meal. I wish there were more cheeseless dishes on the menu, or options to removed the dairy so that I could have tried a wider ranger of dishes. A few of the dishes are vegan, but they only form a minority of the menu, so this is more of a restaurant for meat eaters. I would happily return for another feast – lovely yummy Mexican food.

Bivouac, Northbridge

Bivouac Canteen & Bar Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Bivouac, in the heart of Northbridge on William Street offers a variety of Middle Eastern and Meditteranean fare. The food is designed for sharing, including small plates and larger plates.
We started with a mocktail – a citrus based fruity delight with a hint of sourness. 1

From the small plate section we chose the Israeli duck liver pate with mustard kasundi, pickles and matzah crackers. This was such a beautiful dish, really rich and flavourful. The pickled radishes were incredibly good.

2

For larger dishes we chose the 9 spice Palestinian Chicken Musakhan, again a wonderful combination of flavours with fennel, toasted buckwheat and smoked garlic yoghurt.

3

Mint and chilli eggplant was exquisite. Perfectly cooked eggplant with chickpea msabaha, herbed vegan yoghurt, fermented paprika, and crispy shallot.

4

We also chose a Syrian potato salad with fennel, almond, chilli, lemon and herbs – probably the best potato salad I have eaten.

6

Bivouac really does deliver a feast of flavours, and it’s nice to try dishes from different regions of the middle east – there really is a shortage of restaurants delivering this type of cuisine in Perth. I really couldn’t fault any dish and I will definitely return for more.

Blackbird, East Perth

I hadn’t heard of Blackbird before, but decided to give it a try and take advantage of a 50% discount offer – I was quite impressed with the Urbanspoon rating so thought it would be above average.
We went on a Sunday lunchtime, and the restaurant is in a lovely setting right on the river just behind Royal Street.

1

The interior of the restaurant was casual and cosy, and the waitresses were cheery and welcoming. I liked that the drinks list offered some mocktails, and decided to opt for a nojito, an alcohol free mojito, which was very good.11

The menu options were fairly limited (4 choices for each course) but all sounded
appetising. We chose to have some bread, and the waitress was very helpful in allowing me to have olive oil with balsamic vinegar rather than the usual Parisian butter. The bread was fresh and crusty – good quality. We decided to share a tasting plate starter.12

This consisted of a slice of beef with blue cheese on bread, tomato and mushroom crostini, polenta with a capsicum sauce, and an arancini ball with pumpkin puree. They were all tasty and good quality – very enjoyable.
For main course I chose the fish of the day which was snapper in a light batter with chips, tartare sauce and a fennel and orange salad: 13

The chips were excellent, crispy and tasty, the salad was also very good and complemented the fish well. The snapper was good quality and fresh.
My companion chose beef medallions with sugar snap peas, roast potatoes, pumpkin
puree, balsamic onions and mushroom duxelle: 14

The beef was cooked perfectly, all of the elements worked well and the textures
complemented each other well. For dessert I chose chocolate pudding with cherries and coffee ice cream: 15

It was a huge portion of chocolate pudding and quite rich, but very very good. I would have liked another scoop of ice cream – it was home made and had a really rich coffee flavour. My companion chose chocolate truffles and coffee.

So will I go back to Blackbird ? Yes I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and felt pleasantly full afterwards. It is a nice environment, good quality food and friendly service. The only thing that let them down slightly was serving a chipped plate, but I think that the food made up for that faux pas.
Visit Date – July 2013

We haven’t been to Blackbird for quite a few years and decided to go on a Saturday night to try their Chef’s Choice menu. Quite good value at $50 per head for 3 starters, 2 mains and a dessert.
The restaurant is right on the river at East Perth, a beautiful and chilled setting with seating inside and outside. It’s quite intimate and as evening falls, it really comes into it’s own with candle lighting around the windows and on the tables.

2

Our waitress was very friendly and helpful and seemed quite enthusiastic that we had chosen the chef’s choice menu. We ordered drinks and snacked on a small bowl of warm popcorn, seasoned with their homemade salt mixture. We chose a chardonnay from South Australia.

3

The first starter was prosciutto et croutes, a small piece of crispy bread with apple, prosciutto and goats cheese, drizzled with a little truffle oil. It was nice, and just a small mouthful to get us started.

4

After this came a plate of vegetable croquettes with some capsicum and thyme
mayonnaise. They were quite filling, mainly consisting of pumpkin, and we enjoyed eating them. 5

The next starter was a bowl of garlic and butter clams, probably something that we would not usually order. The clams were fresh although some of the shells were closed which seemed a bit of a waste, and the sauce was nice. We mopped up the sauce with some bread, but it would have been nice to have more bread to do this.

6

The first of the mains was a ravioli of rocket and parmesan with blue cheese cream and spinach. This was the best dish of the night, the sauce really brought the pasta to life and I would have been very happy to have this as an a la carte dish. 7

The second main was sous vide chicken with orange jus, Israeli couscous, corn, spinach and chorizo. The Israeli couscous are quite large pearls of couscous. I expected the chicken to be more orange-flavoured, considering that it had been cooked with the orange and that the jus was made with the meat juices and orange. It hadn’t really intensified that much and I would have liked it to penetrate the whole piece of chicken. 8

Finally, the dessert was served. A small piece of brownie, a small panna cotta, and a caramel ice cream. Each element was nice, but not outstanding. I think that the portions could have been slightly bigger.

9

We had a nice meal in a beautiful setting, and it was certainly good value for $50 each. I left feeling that they could do so much better though. Everything was nice, but nothing out of the ordinary, and if this menu is showcasing the main menu, then it didn’t wow me. It wasn’t bad either, everything was perfectly edible, but I didn’t feel that I need to rush back to try other items on the menu. The setting is amazing though, it’s a great place for an intimate date.

Scents of Siam, Joondalup

Scents of Siam Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

There are regular Thai restuarants, and then there’s Scents of Siam. This local gem is a labour of love for its owners. Dan, who manages front of house, is Singaporean Chinese, and his wife Yui – who is the Thai-Chinese brainchild behind the dishes, manages the kitchen.
They strive to present a fusion of old and new dishes crossing the boundaries of Thai and Chinese and covering the whole geography of Thailand from north to south.
Generally, I don’t like pan-asian restaurants that try to serve more than one cuisine in order to please everybody, and thankfully Scents of Siam doesn’t do this – it brings us a very special insight into the food that the Thai-Chinese communities eat, and if the recipe isn’t perfect then chef doesn’t put it on the menu.
Dan explains the menu to his customers in detail and he talks about the origin of the dishes, and the stories behind their names, often testing out new dishes with his regular clients.

One of the specialities if a drink called butterfly pea flower iced tea. When presented, it is blue and tastes quite floral:

1

Then you add a shot of lime juice, and some theatre happens ! It turns purple and tastes much more fruity:2

For our starters we chose mixed mushroom rice paper rolls. Containing button, enoki, shiitake and oyster mushrooms they were very juicy and tasty. A wonderful start to the meal:

3

Update – since this visit the mushroom rolls are now presented as crispy spring rolls.

A favourite starter is Son In Law Eggs:

4

Wonderfully oozy with a crispy coating and a delicious chilli tamarind sauce, Dan told us the two stories of how they were named. Story 1 tells that a father wanted to know if his daughter loved him more than her husband, so he challenged his son-in-law to a competition where they would cook eggs for her to see which eggs she preferred. He was convinced that his daughter would choose his version, but sadly for him, she chose her husband’s eggs and they became known as son-in-law eggs. Story 2 tells how a lady was cooking at the bottom of her house, which was a house on stilts (built for the monsoon).
She accidentally dropped an egg into hot oil but when she scooped it out, she realised that it was very tasty, cooked quickly with a firm white and a soft yolk. She was thinking about what to call this egg recipe when she looked up, and through the gaps in the floorboards she saw her son-in-law walking above, wearing nothing but a sarong, and she rather cheekily got the inspiration to call them son-in-law eggs !

We ordered 3 dishes for the main and first up was a delicious chicken penang curry. This dish had such a wonderful depth of flavour, that I could eat it again in a heartbeat. Complete with thai holy basil leaves, the brightness of kaffir lime, plenty of good quality chicken, and a rich smooth coconut sauce, it was an absolute pleasure to eat.

5

We also ordered roti, wonderfully light and crispy and perfect for dipping in the curry.6

Pad Thai was served with extra chilli in case of need, and was a wonderful mix of noodles, beansprouts, chicken, tofu and prawns, perfectly balanced and absolutely delicious.7

We said yes to dessert, and were presented with a lovely thai creme caramel with mango sorbet.8

The creme caramel was sprinkled with nuts and there was a hint of chilli in the caramel. Very yummy and a perfect end to the meal.

This restaurant is definitely our local favourite and we visit several times every month. Here are some more pictures of the food:

Bangkok Brothers, Whitfords

Bangkok Brothers Whitfords Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Bangkok Brothers is one of the new restaurants located at Whitfords Mall on the cinema ‘strip’. It’s a large area with seating inside and out, and a modern twist on a traditional Thai menu. We were looking forward to our meals.

1

It took a while to get served, the staff seemed busy rearranging tables and settings in a restaurant that was only 10% occupied, and it was hard to catch their attention. Eventually a waitress attended the table, and she was quite pleasant. To start we chose to share some traditional Thai prawn cakes – minced pork and prawn in a crispy coating – deep fried.
They were served with a sticky plum sauce. This was a generous portion and the cakes were tasty. The sauce was quite sticky and sweet, and I would have liked a lime citrus contrast.

2

We drank pink lemonade, which I was expecting to be raspberry flavoured lemonade – subtle and a little sharp, but again, this was cloyingly sweet – think supermarket brand cherry soda and then double the sweetness – I found it hard to drink this.

3

For mains we picked the soft shell crab with som tum – two of my favourite things, and a green chicken curry with rice.
Sadly the soft shell crab did not deliver – the batter tasted strange, and the crab was soft and a little soggy. The som tum was a fairly standard papaya salad, but had some large chunks of chilli in it and was quite astringent, so it made my mouth sore. I have eaten som tum on several occasions, and sometimes it can be quite hot and sour, but this was quite extreme.

4

The crab was accompanied by some very sweet Thai chilli sauce. Sadly I left most of the crab because of the strange batter – I wondered if it had been cooked in the same oil as chicken wings.
When the green curry arrived, there wasn’t much room on the table, so my partner picked his plate up, and the waiter pretty much threw the curry down on the table and walked off without attempting to help rearrange the table. It seemed really rude.
The green curry was equally disappointing. It was under-seasoned and the veggies were raw. I don’t mind blanched veggies in my Thai curry, but these veggies were solid and not pleasant to eat. I was disappointed that the curry omitted eggplant, which is the traditional veg that you would see – instead there was broccoli, zucchini and mangetout.

5

We left most of the food. The staff didn’t ask if the meal was okay, and the service was mostly somewhere between rude and non-existent. I won’t be wasting my money in here again.

High Tea – the Treasury Lounge at the Como, Perth CBD

Treasury Lounge and Bar Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

The Treasury Lounge at the Como Hotel is set in the State Buildings on St George’s Terrace. Steeped in history, the lounge is elegant and sophisticated, and we were seated at a table overlooking the terrace and the Council House.

1

Afternoon tea must be booked in advance and can be taken with a glass of Taittinger Brut Reserve champagne, a glass of sparkling Great Southern Australian wine (from Denmark), or alcohol free. All versions include unlimited Mano a Mano coffee, and tea, with a choice of Assam breakfast, Earl Grey, chai, peppermint, oolong, white peony, jasmine pearls or long jing with teas supplied by Jing. Prices range from $55 to $80 per person.
We settled in with some tea – I chose jasmine pearls which arrived in a see through pot, and as the tea brewed the pearls opened up in the most beautiful way.

Assam breakfast tea was clean and nicely flavoured, arriving in a more traditional pot.

4

5

The menu is designed around the best local ingredients, and I chose to suffer my sneezes
and go with a traditional menu rather than choose a non-dairy version. I did ask them to
leave the quail egg off my egg sandwich though as I am severely allergic to quail eggs.
The savouries were perfection. Egg mayonnaise sandwich with caviar (and quail egg if you eat them), made with Baldivis free range eggs; a shark bay prawn roll with wasabi tobiko and kipfler chips; roast chicken, smoked bacon (from Linley Valley pork) and vintage cheddar roulade.

6

789

The quality of the ingredients was clear with strong fresh flavours, and so much care in the presentation. Next came wonderful light scones – one plain and one with sultanas, cream and jam – again a really pleasurable experience.

10

The cakes were the crowning glory of the afternoon tea – all very thoughtful creations,
again using local ingredients.

11

The Tarte au Citron, using lemons from Gingin, consisted of a hazelnut sable biscuit base
with topped with citrus cream, Swiss meringue and a zingy citrus compote.

12

The gold dusted profiterole hid a coffee cremeaux, a dulce de leche and caramelized pecan – beans supplied by WA coffee roasters Mano a Mano.13

The mandarin mousse made with mandarins from Moora, consisted of almond biscuit,
streusel, mandarin toffee, Bavarian chocolate and feather light mandarin mousse.

Every mouthful was delicious and this is certainly one of the best afternoon teas in Perth.
The thought and care that has gone in to each creation is clear – a real Treasury of taste.

Voyage Kitchen, Sorrento

Voyage Kitchen Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Voyage has been a favourite brunch and Sunday roast spot for many years now. In a beautiful location by Sorrento beach, it’s always busy with customers getting their caffeine fix, brunch, salads, cakes and more. Norma’s salsa (avocado, tomatoes, poached egg, herbed labne, toast) is almost a Perth institution.

Capture

The coffee has always been great and the menu quite varied with treats like kale spinach and ricotta croquettes:

In recent months we think there has been a change of management and the old favourites are no longer on the menu. The food looks nice, but doesn’t deliver like it used to. I recently chose the Voyage veggie stack – sweet potato fritters with corn, beetroot hummus, avocado and salad. Sadly it was all very mushy and not very well seasoned.

20200229_115744

My partner chose the mushroooms with polenta and green salad – again underseasoned and not the standard that we expect from Voyage.

Voyage is in one of the best locations, but they really need to get back on top of their game to keep the crowds coming.4

The Wild Fig Cafe, Scarborough

The Wild Fig Cafe Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

This appears to be the only survivor of the Fig group of cafes (the Naked Fig and the Pickled Fig seem to have closed), and it is in a great location on Scarborough Esplanade not far from the powder white sand and blue ocean.

The menu is not overly inventive – it has many of the brekkie favourites – eggs, croissants, pancakes etc. but I liked that the menu offered several vegan and gluten free options. I can’t cope with much dairy – it’s good to have non-dairy alternatives, and this is where a vegan friendly menu helps me.

I chose a coco loco shake to drink – mango sorbet with coconut milk, vanilla, cinnamon and shredded coconut. This was very enjoyable and nice and thick.

My partner chose a soy decaf coffee, which he said was rich and tasty, very good for a decaf.

20181229_094206

For mains he chose Eggs on Fire – poached eggs, bacon, harissa, avocado, chorizo, sweetcorn potato cake and chilli salsa on ciabatta. This was a good meal where everything worked well together, and he enjoyed it.

20181229_095248

I chose the deluxe banana pancakes with caramelised pineapple, crushed pistachios and coconut syrup. When they arrived they had a quenelle of ice cream, and I tentatively tasted it. It tasted quite creamy, and I suspected that it was a dairy ice cream. I also tested some pancakes and they equally tasted  like regular pancakes with milk.

20181229_095244

When I checked with the waitress, she realised that there had been a mistake and she returned with the vegan pancakes which were brown in colour. It’s a good job that I am not majorly allergic to dairy otherwise I could have suffered a really bad reaction to the first plate. The second plate tasted good, but considering that they were sold as ‘deluxe banana pancakes’ I would have liked a bit more banana.

20181229_095807

All in all the meals were tasty, and it was good to have dietary choices, but nothing was outstanding – this cafe serves good, honest food, and that’s about it. Lovely staff, good location.

Wild Swan, Mandoon Estate, Caversham

Mandoon Estate Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Mandoon has a lot going on. The estate is a winery in the heart of the Swan Valley, and they have cellar door tastings, a brewery, an art gallery, a fine dining restaurant, an outdoor area where they sell pizza, craft beer, and hot dogs, and a deli where they sell exceptional sausage rolls. They also have a hotel called The Colony, rooms which look out onto the Swan River, some with balconies and mezzanine bedrooms.

1Having sampled a glass of wine earlier, I decided to start with a cocktail and chose a cosmopolitan. This was nicely made with lovely cranberry tones.

2

My partner chose a ginger apple mocktail. He said that it was a lovely blend.

3

I chose the marron to start served with watermelon, lime and papaya. It wasn’t a
particularly flavoursome dish and I imagine that it had been prepared in advance and refrigerated. I couldn’t really detect the lovely marron and papaya flavours that I expected.4

My partner chose the Geraldton kingfish with young coconut, umibudo, daikon and lime. It was a good blend of flavours, bright clean and tasty.5

The starters arrived fairly quickly, followed by our bread, which I think was a bit of a mistake, but the bread was a very welcome arrival to help mop up some of the leftover sauces, and was served with whipped butter and a very moreish fennel salt.6

For main I chose the blue fin tuna with cauliflower, green raisin, pinenut and olive. This was delicious, served medium rare, good quality fish with really good accompanying flavours.7

My partner chose the Moojepin mutton with canneloni, borlotti, lettuce and raspberry. Mutton is generally tougher than lamb, and he expected it to be slow roast to make the most of the cut, but it came seared like a steak and was a bit chewier than he would have liked although it was very tasty. All of the accompaniments were rich, hearty and comforting and he enjoyed the dish.8

We also chose side dishes of broccoli, snow peas and beans, and zucchini fries. Both sides were beautifully cooked and we ate them hungrily.

We somehow found room for dessert, but before that I sampled a glass of Mandoon Estate sparkling, which put me in mind of a good prosecco.

11

I chose the matcha, lychee, yuzu and caramel, a nice combination of matcha cake with lychee sorbet and dried lychees with blobs of caramel and oblong shaped yuzu cream.

12

My partner chose the peach, pistachio, vanilla and sorbet, a beautifully balanced combination of textures and tastes. A vanilla panacotta with blobs of pistachio paste and peach puree.13

All in all, Wild Swan was a good experience – good modern Australian cooking with friendly unobtrusive service, and wines made on the premises. An excellent choice if you want to stay somewhere in the Swan Valley that has everything at your fingertips.

Waterside Inn, Bray, Berkshire UK

Waterside Inn Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

The Waterside Inn at Bray, Berkshire is the only restaurant in the UK to have held 3 Michelin stars since 1985. The restaurant was opened by Albert and Michel Roux in 1972 and gained its first star in 1974, its second in 1977 and the third in 1985. In 1986 Michel took over the running of the restaurant and passed the reins to his son Alain in 2002.

At the time of writing there are only 5 restaurants in the UK that hold 3 Michelin stars, so that gives you an idea of the enormity of this achievement. You know that when you dine here you are going to experience something truly special. The restaurant is in a lovely setting. Bray is a sweet little English village that could feature on a jigsaw or a chocolate box, and the Waterside Inn is right on the river Thames.1

2

3

When you arrive at the restaurant, one of the staff valet will park your car for you, such a lovely touch, but also a sensible one because parking is limited. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, they are attentive, but not overly so, and you soon get the feeling that you are about to have a very special dinner in a friend’s dining room.

You can choose A la carte or Le Menu Exceptionnel – we chose the latter which is a tasting menu showcasing the best of Alain’s creations. I have had tasting menus before, and they are usually fairly small portions which end up with you feeling just full, but the Waterside Inn is different, the portions are relatively generous, so be careful not to fill up on bread (I saved some bread on my side plate to mop up the delicious sauces with every course).
We were served canapes consisting of a tart with mussel and lemon, a light as air cheese pastry bun and a duck terrine served on a crisp biscuit. Each mouthful was perfect, no flavour was too overpowering and every ingredient added something to the overall taste. Mmmmm what a taste of things to come.

4

Apologies for the quality of some of my photographs, but I am no photographic expert, and I couldn’t seem to get the lighting right. The quality of the photos on the Waterside Inn website is much better.

Next came an amuse bouche which was a profiterole of mushrooms with a parsley sauce.
5

Next was a lobster salad with citrus jelly and raspberry vinaigrette. This was one of my favourite courses – I love lobster, and I loved the fact that the serving was large enough to give you a real taste of the lobster.
6a

Next was an incredibly smooth chestnut and champagne veloute with partridge and fois gras dumplings.
7

Following the veloute was a fish course of turbot baked in a vine leaf and served with white grapes and a verjus emulsion. I love turbot.
8

There was a choice of main course – we chose the duck, which was expertly carved at the table. This was a spit-roast Challandais duck with a bubble and squeak patty, some apple, and a calvados flavoured jus.
9

Then onto dessert, pre-dessert was a sable biscuit with pears and blueberries.
10

Followed by a very special warm golden plum souffle.
11

With very full tummies we were invited to sit in the lounge for tea and coffee, when we were presented with a tiered stand of amazing petit fours, each one expertly crafted.

12

The whole experience was memorable, and each course an absolute triumph. The restaurant manager, Diego chatted with us during the meal, he was charming and entertaining, and before we left, we met Alain Roux who was interested to gain our feedback on the meal. I can honestly say that the Waterside Inn is a unique, memorable and enjoyable venue, and I am very much looking forward to returning there.
