It Just Has To Be Delicious

Le Papillon, Joondalup

pap 4

We popped into Le Papillon for a quick coffee and pastry. This cafe is on Lakeside Drive in Joondalup and has seating inside and out. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that they have freshly ground decaf beans (so many cafes just use decaf powder, which is never very good). I asked for almond croissants, and they didn’t have any ready, but the nice lady said she would have some freshly made in ten minutes.

We settled down at a table by the window and sipped on our lovely smooth coffee.

pap 5

A short while later our croissants arrived and they were definitely worth the wait – crispy with just the right amount of almond paste filling.

pap 6

Le Papillon is definitely one of the better local patisseries and the customer service is great – a cafe run by people who know how to please the crowds.

Health Freak Cafe, Joondalup

If you are on a special diet, or have food allergies, Health Freak provides a range of foods that you can eat – Vegan, Vegetarian, Paleo, Dairy Free, Gluten Free – there’s something for everybody.
With a range of healthy burgers, salads, dessert bowls, juices, smoothies and fries the menu is tempting for the dietary-challenged customer, and it’s nice to read it and think “oh I can eat almost everything here” rather than the regular process of picking just one or maybe two items that fit one’s brief. Options include Pulled pork BBQ jackfruit burger, the ultimate vegan burger, sweet potato fries which can be loaded with jackfruit, keto waffle egg benedict, dairy free ice cream, natural iced teas, acai bowls, caffeine free lattes…the list
goes on.
We popped in to the Joondalup branch for a healthy treat and chose a peanut butter slice:

hf 1

This was nice but could have been a bit sweeter – agave syrup is a good sweetener. The peanut section was quite thick and crumbly and could have been nicer to eat if it was softened with maybe some vegan cream substitute. The chocolate a biscuit layers were very nice.

We also chose a chocolate brownie square:

hf 2

This was a nicer texture than the peanut butter slice and much more chocolatey but had a bit of a bitter aftertaste.
I chose a red apple tea which consisted of rooibos tea with freshly squeezed apple and mint. It was nice, but I didn’t get much of the tea flavour.

hf 3

All in all the healthy treats were okay, but they also didn’t blow us away, and it was quite expensive – not surprising really, because healthy does seem to equate to costly.

Paper Avenue, Joondalup

Paper Avenue is a cafe that has recently opened on the corner of Boas Avenue and Davidson Terrace in Joondalup. It is very clean and modern in style, and the staff are passionate about providing really great food and coffee.
It is an ideal brunch/lunch spot, all food is homemade with love and care.
The menu includes:
Banana bread with lemon zest and a raspberry and star anise compote – absolutely delicious:

pa 1

Buttermilk pancakes with raspberries, jam and lemon curd. Very nice although the jam made them taste really sweet and I would have liked some yoghurt or marscapone to even out the intense sweetness of the jam:

pa 2

Strawberry smoothie – again very nice, pretty and lovingly made, but can be a little variable – the most recent version had too much yoghurt and not enough strawberry:
pa 3

Beef brisket brioche – absolutely overflowing with brisket, with a little special sauce (thousand island style) and apple and mint slaw, tastes lovely and is very filling:

pa 4
pa 5

Brisket Benedict – a very nice twist on eggs benny with hunks of bread and plentiful brisket, guacamole and perfectly cooked eggs all coated with hollandaise:

pa 6

John, Erika and Justin have created a really stylish cafe here. All food is created with perfection in mind, and they are very friendly owners, always keen to give customers little extras to try – “Here’s some chutney that chef made fresh this morning” is a typical example.
The coffee is great, sourced from Locale in Melbourne, it’s clear that they are prepared to go the extra mile to serve the best. With seating inside and outside, I can see Paper Avenue being very busy through summer and beyond – it’s just what Joondalup CBD needed.

Grill’d, Joondalup

Of all the burger joints in Perth, Alfred’s Kitchen is my favourite, but when I don’t want to make the trek to Guildford, Grill’d is probably the best chain around. I like that they offer a low carb superbun, and the patties are always fresh, lean and tasty.
My go to option tends to be mustard and pickled, but I spotted a wagyu version on the menu and decided to try the Bonfire BBQ (minus the cheese) – the menu description is:
Premium wagyu pattie with native Davidson plum barbeque sauce, crispy bacon, Dijon mustard, pickle, aged cheddar, Spanish onion & egg mayo.
It was very good, the dijon and plum sauce add a nice piquant but sweet twist.

gr 1

My partner chose the Moroccan lamb – Grass fed lean lamb, roasted peppers, tzatziki, salad & relish. This was nicely spicy, very tasty and a great combination with the smooth contrast of the tzatziki.

gr 2

We also chose the herby chips and a chilli mayo dip. Grill’d always delivers on flavour choice and great service.

Grill’d also have several vegan and vegetarian options with veggie patties, pea protein patties and Beyond meat patties.

Peppermint Green, Joondalup

Peppermint Green is a lovely cafe just off Winton Road in Delage Street. As soon as you walk in, you can see that it is clean, bright, and welcoming.

pg 1

We stopped off for a small bite before shopping. I ordered an orange and cinnamon iced tea which was lovely. They also offer allergy friendly options, and various different milks if you don’t do dairy.

pg 2

My partner chose good old English Breakfast tea, served with a cute Teddy biscuit.

I accompanied my tea with some raspberry and pear bread. This was lovely and i really enjoyed it.

pg 5

My partner chose raisin toast – again a great fruity rich option with lost of nice spices.

pg 6

The cake cabinet is very tempting and nicely laid out:

pg 7

I have revisited since and found that staff were very accommodating in preparing scrambled eggs and bacon for me with no cream or butter.

pg 8

My partner had smashed avocado on toast with feta, which was nicely prepared and a good texture.

pg 9

This coffee house is a local gem, well worth a visit. They also have a good homewares section to browse through.

Kabalason, Joondalup

We popped into Kabalason one evening on a whim as we were passing. The last time we dined here was many years ago and we ate thali which was nice, but not amazing. I remember the flavours as being very strong and the spices a bit raw. Anyway, that was ages ago and last time we walked past Kabalason there were many people dining and we felt that it was worth another try.
We were quite early, and there was one other diner. A buffet was laid out under heat lamps, but our experience of buffet food is not good, so we decided to eat a la carte. The waitress did try to persuade us to have buffet ($24.50) but we wanted something freshly cooked and relatively light.
We chose chicken tikka, seekh kebab, cauliflower capsicum masala curry and two garlic naans.

kab 1

The tikka was served with a limp looking salad and a mint yoghurt sauce. The meat was a bit tough and didn’t taste as if it had been freshly cooked. It tasted more like a part cooked tikka that had been warmed up, the flavour was okay, but the mouthfeel was dense and I have had much better tikkas.

kab 2

The seekh kebab was better than the tikka, but again served with a limp salad that we didn’t touch. I suspect that the salad had been made up quite some time earlier and left in the fridge. The meat was nicely spiced, and a bit on the salty side, but a nice flavoured kebab.

kab 3

The cauliflower capsicum masala started off okay, but as I ate more of it I found it quite strongly spiced, and the spices had a raw edge to them as if they had not been cooked through. One of the secrets of a great curry is to cook it long and slow so that the spices really get a chance to develop and lose their hot rawness. The first few spoonfuls were okay, but as I ate more, I found it salty, hot and overbearing and I left most of it.

kab 4

The garlic naans were nicely flavoured but variable in texture. One was soft and a little doughy, but the better of the two. The other one was quite crisp and stiff, so I couldn’t wrap my curry in it.
So will I go back to Kabalason ? Probably not. I don’t know for sure, but I suspect that they make a lot of food in advance for the buffet and then just reheat as required. Other than the naan nothing tasted really fresh and bright, and the constant throat-clearing and sneezing coming from the kitchen was quite off-putting. We spent over $60 on a very average meal.

Papparich, Joondalup

PappaRich Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

When Papparich arrived in Australia, I was quite pleased to see somewhere serving Malaysian delights, and a good place to get a Nasi Lemak fix.
In recent times I have also found some limited vegetarian options, and the vegetarian ‘mutton’ nasi lemak is definitely a good substitute. If you are vegan you have to ask them to omit the egg.

Papparich also serve noodles, kway teow, roti canai, laksa, the menu is quite extensive – complete with an array of authentic drinks. You complete your own order form, press the doorbell on the table, and a waitress arrives to process the order.

Generally this is a good restaurant, but it can be quite variable depending on when you go. Portion sizes can vary considerably, and the quality of the beef rendang ranges from perfectly melting to a bit chewy.

Drinks include various fruity options plus teh tarik, kopi o, jelly drinks and soy options.

Definitely worth a visit.

Dragon Palace, Joondalup

Dragon Palace Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

Dragon Palace is my favourite spot in Northbridge for dim sum/yum cha, and they have recently opened a branch more locally to me in Joondalup. Word has passed around quickly that there’s dim sum in Joondalup, and every Sunday there are queues of hungry diners outside waiting for their number to be called.
Like the Northbridge joint, you register your name and number of diners, and receive a raffle ticket, the prize being your table, once it’s ready. Dragon Palace provide all of the regular dim sum favourites, and you can also order a la carte or from the dim sum menu if your choice is not available on the trolleys. We didn’t want a huge amount and just chose a few of our favourite dishes, starting off with a pot of Jasmine tea.

The first food that we selected from the trolley was sticky rice in lotus leaf. This is a wonderful package of sticky rice and mixed meats wrapped and steamed in a lotus leaf – it’s like unwrapping a present because you never know what’s going to be inside – and it was a lovely selection of tasty chicken, pork, egg and mushroom. It was also nice to be given a bowl of chilli oil sauce at the start of the meal with out having to ask for it.

dragonp 3
dragonp 4

We also chose siu mai prawn and pork dumplings – a classic dim sum dish – and ours tasted juicy and well seasoned.

dragonp 5

The prawn and coriander dumplings were equally succulent:

dragonp 6

My personal favourite is crispy seafood dumplings – always served with mayo (and sometimes the mayo has mango in it). Yum.

dragonp 7

We finished up with wor tip – fried Shanghai style dumplings filled with meat, leeks, cabbage, and other delights, and served with the essential red vinegar accompaniment.

dragonp 8

I really enjoyed the meal, and Dragon Palace has become a firm favourite for Sunday dim sum. There are a few vegetarian options available too.

Scents of Siam, Joondalup

Scents of Siam Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

There are regular Thai restuarants, and then there’s Scents of Siam. This local gem is a labour of love for its owners. Dan, who manages front of house, is Singaporean Chinese, and his wife Yui – who is the Thai-Chinese brainchild behind the dishes, manages the kitchen.
They strive to present a fusion of old and new dishes crossing the boundaries of Thai and Chinese and covering the whole geography of Thailand from north to south.
Generally, I don’t like pan-asian restaurants that try to serve more than one cuisine in order to please everybody, and thankfully Scents of Siam doesn’t do this – it brings us a very special insight into the food that the Thai-Chinese communities eat, and if the recipe isn’t perfect then chef doesn’t put it on the menu.
Dan explains the menu to his customers in detail and he talks about the origin of the dishes, and the stories behind their names, often testing out new dishes with his regular clients.

One of the specialities if a drink called butterfly pea flower iced tea. When presented, it is blue and tastes quite floral:

1

Then you add a shot of lime juice, and some theatre happens ! It turns purple and tastes much more fruity:2

For our starters we chose mixed mushroom rice paper rolls. Containing button, enoki, shiitake and oyster mushrooms they were very juicy and tasty. A wonderful start to the meal:

3

Update – since this visit the mushroom rolls are now presented as crispy spring rolls.

A favourite starter is Son In Law Eggs:

4

Wonderfully oozy with a crispy coating and a delicious chilli tamarind sauce, Dan told us the two stories of how they were named. Story 1 tells that a father wanted to know if his daughter loved him more than her husband, so he challenged his son-in-law to a competition where they would cook eggs for her to see which eggs she preferred. He was convinced that his daughter would choose his version, but sadly for him, she chose her husband’s eggs and they became known as son-in-law eggs. Story 2 tells how a lady was cooking at the bottom of her house, which was a house on stilts (built for the monsoon).
She accidentally dropped an egg into hot oil but when she scooped it out, she realised that it was very tasty, cooked quickly with a firm white and a soft yolk. She was thinking about what to call this egg recipe when she looked up, and through the gaps in the floorboards she saw her son-in-law walking above, wearing nothing but a sarong, and she rather cheekily got the inspiration to call them son-in-law eggs !

We ordered 3 dishes for the main and first up was a delicious chicken penang curry. This dish had such a wonderful depth of flavour, that I could eat it again in a heartbeat. Complete with thai holy basil leaves, the brightness of kaffir lime, plenty of good quality chicken, and a rich smooth coconut sauce, it was an absolute pleasure to eat.

5

We also ordered roti, wonderfully light and crispy and perfect for dipping in the curry.6

Pad Thai was served with extra chilli in case of need, and was a wonderful mix of noodles, beansprouts, chicken, tofu and prawns, perfectly balanced and absolutely delicious.7

We said yes to dessert, and were presented with a lovely thai creme caramel with mango sorbet.8

The creme caramel was sprinkled with nuts and there was a hint of chilli in the caramel. Very yummy and a perfect end to the meal.

This restaurant is definitely our local favourite and we visit several times every month. Here are some more pictures of the food:
